Torn Between 05 STi and 05 EVO VIII GSR
The sti and the evo are two different cars. If you drive an evo and you aren't truly blown back by the way it drives than you shouldn't even be considering it.
Before I got my 05 evo I test drove the sti and I'll tell you what I wasn't that impressed with it. Yes it drove well, had power but left me with a fealing that it was missing something. When I drove the evo I found out what it was missing. The evo just out performs the sti in a big way and the more you drive the evo it just keeps getting better and better.

STI----- almost honda like steering feel once you've owned an evo
Tricky ECU
Too soft of a suspension
Ugly
EVO----------**** on porsche and ferrari owners
500 horse power reliable on stock motor
Go Kart Feel(race car
)
Better Tires
Better Brakes
Better Shift feel
Clean Look
Front Mount Intercooler
Theres no contest here.......The evo is better in just about every way you can compare them.....the only reason to get the sti is if your a sucker or a geezer.....

Evo is a better car its more refined handles way better has way more power potencial
If you plan on modding your car a lot get the Evo.
If you want a daily driver that is all under warrentee and backed well by the manufacturer get the Subbie.

Lost faith in evo.. crappy paint, crappy clutch, mitsi going under, denied warrenties, no race support, stupid service departments, lancer junk interior, torn seats, warping brembos, unaligned door hinges, and a very slim chance the car will go over 65k. Over all its a great sports car, but the cost to fix everything that mitsu ****ed up on makes this a 50 grand car. The car has been out since 92, and they still can't get it right. Give me a quality built, bullet proof evo and i would buy it for as much as it would cost.

Mitsubishi sucks but the Evo is awesome
I have 40k on my car with over 400 crank hp on my stock clutch and i have yet to do a single launch. There is nothing wrong with the clutch or transfercase as far as i care. **** simply breaks when you abuse it.
I own both cars as well and let me tell you that the evo is SO much more fun than the STi. We really havent done anyhting to the STi to make power other than an exhaust but as far i can tell, there's a lot of stuff you have to get taken care of to make much more power. (ie fuel pump, turbo, injectors, ect...) The STi clutch is stronger than the evo clutch though. Dont have any comments on the tranny except it grinds too. DCCD is pretty sweet. It doesnt handle nearly as well. Steering sucks. (at least on the 04) build quality is equal to mitsubishi except the STi has a better interior. Also, the evo has A LOT more interior space.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask :-)

are you talking about the STi also?
Id rather not deal with grinding trannies and failing clutches with a company that voids warranties

Godai:
See earlier post. My friend didn't tune the Bilstiens on the MR, just drove the car. He says the Bilstiens are are mostly a marketing tool on the Evo, just like Brembo's, Momo wheel, Enkei wheels, Recaro seats, etc. He says the KYBs are similar in design and can be valved to perform the same as Bilstiens but just don't have the prestige, especially in Japan.

gbbraveheart-
Please keep in mind with either car you are paying a fraction of what it would cost to get any other car that can perform as well as these two. The emphasis is performance and you will be very happy with either one. You mentioned that you are big on power and handling, so I think you would like the evo better since you can pretty much leave the handling alone and spend all your money on power mods. In my case, I only changed the exhaust (Vishnu dumpback, highly recommended) and the power increase is phenomenal. Having said that, the sti has alot of torque even stock and the potential is not necessarily limited, its just not explored yet.
Regarding my comment on snow performance, the suspension on the evo is set up to oversteer more easily so excercise caution even if you have good snow tires. Take my word for it, it you are not careful and know the limits of the car you will be surprised.
Any other questions I would happy to help.

and the dealer i bought my car from is mod friendly. infact they have a deal with WORKS out of SF.
As much as i love the evo...im reaching the end of my patience with it...sure its got great handling or w/e and great modability, but i really can't put it to use anyway (i'm not rolling with $$$ to go autoxing and modding the car every day)...now i never abused my car (sides speeding from time to time but rarely...i dont like wasting gas) but my car kept on breaking...paint chipping...tranny starting to grind for 2nd time already...clutch is fine cuz i never launched my car but since evos are so damn uncommon compared to STis and WRXs (they look the same pretty much exteriorwise sides few things like the gigantic spoiler), i was pulled over by the cops very easily and ticketed for doing nothing but having few minor mods on (intake, t/t) and now im ordered to remove them so my car's gonna be stock for rest of its life (unless i move out of cali), so i can't put 4g63's potential to use anyway...
sti on the other hand seems to have good tranny...i dont really care about warranty problem since i'm not the type of abuse my car...besides, the boxer engine sounds nice stock
just my 2cent...*equips flame-proof gear*
