My wife and I bought an 05 (standard) Evo yesterday after driving the Evo and Sti. We did like the Sti, and thought it had a nicer interior and better ride, but just liked the Evo better. I actually think the Sti is higher quality overall, but the the Evo handled better and had more spirit - and we also preferred the looks of the Evo so that's the one we bought.

both are lookers in my opinion and i own a wrx right now but dealing with 4 DSM's previously and always wanting the EVO 6 GSR (my favorite EVO of them ALL) ide just go with a EVO if you can get past thier troubleshootings, DONT BEAT ON IT 24/7 and mod it accordingly

I beleive he made a good choice because of a few reasons. My opinion may be disconected since i dont own either(Mr2 Turbo) but i know tons about both and it seems that the STI is a better performer then a GSR and way better for the money over a MR. A lot of you guys talk about handling but if you look at the actual times of the cars, the STI was less then a second slower then the MR according to C&D. Thats really close and i think it would have been closer if not the same if the STI had the same 235 advans instead of the 225s it uses. That alone makes me think that they are about the about same as far as performence. Plus its way cheaper considering the markups on the MR right now. Considering this makes me think that the GSR will be slower then both the MR and STI around the track. Even if the GSR "feels" tighter then the STI this does not mean its a better performer, it just means you feel more connected with the car(witch is important) but not the best measure of overall handling. Plus the STI has a lot more standard features then the GSR like HIDS and a better interior. Now if you plan to mod your car beyond bolt ons, then yes, the evo is your best choice but other then that. Plus if you consider the quality of the cars and what company makes them and thier actions,I see the STi as a better value then all the evos except maybe the RS. Im not saying my opinoin is the best but ive read a lot about both sides of the argument and this is what ive come up with. I reality, i love the evo more but rationally, the STI is the best pick.

What's so great about the STI's interior, it's got cheezy seats and plastic around the steering wheel. Also standard features??? Like what a radio?

I agree the STI is a nice car stock. BUT Stock for Stock the EVO mr is still quicker and I would also say a 05 EVO with 5 speed and regular shocks would also be faster then a STI.

O5s have ACD/ Front LSD and a larger exhaust housing, the 03 did not and still was faster then the 04 USDM STI.

Sti is nice but the EVO is nicer in meny ways.

yea. but the STI was inproved a lot in 05, thats what car i was comparing to the Mr and GSR. The interior might not be that great on a STI but its still better then a evo, i think most evo people have said that here. and Unless a 05 gsr runs the exact same track times as a MR, its not going to beat a STI, especially with the same quality tires as the EVO on them

There are some STI owners who switched to the Evo and said that the interior was not that much better. Both cars have plastic all over so the Evo Recaros were better than the STI seats. You said STI on a track is 1 sec slower because of the tires but have you thought about what if the Evo had 300hp? Both nice cars but the Evo is more raw so it really depends on what you want. Dont know why but there are a lot of Evo owners that used to own the STI It is a close call so for me I went for the looks which is the Evo.

yea but in that review, the evo MR actually dynoed a couple HP more then the STI. And you mentioned that "raw" factor of the STI. If seems that this feeling has little to do with actual handling that translates into times.

Honelty the 05 GSR would be almost as fast as a MR. The 5spd is a good box with perfect gearing. On the track it would be about equal. Also about the tires all we are talking about is 10mm Slight over a 1/3 of in with also the STI has some nice meats on it to boot and 225 size was idel for that car that's why they have not movied up in size.

About the interior hell a VW Jetta has a nicer interior then both but I'm looking out of the wind shield when driving and not the interior and nor would I want to be driving a Jetta.

IMHO

I'm in the same situation. I'm weighing the pros and cons of an evo MR vs an sti. Seems like the MR is slightly nicer in a lot of areas that matter to me, but I doubt I'll be able to get one. Most I'll spend is 34k, and I doubt the MRs will last long enough to get a price drop that low. RIght now they're selling extremely well for $3k-4k over msrp.

you cant drive the evo tires in the snow, just to let you know that, i dont know about the sti tires, unless they sell different tires for the evo where you live, but on the side of the drivers door, theres something about tire info, that says warning, ride these tires on snow, and good luck getting out alive. i rephrased that, but you get my point.

I personally think if you really like the MR dont back out because of the price and get something else that you might not be as happy with. If I were you I would just carve up a few more grand and get it. Thats just me though
