My 03 evo blew a clutch and a transfer case in under 10k. I'd go with the sti, al the shortcomings the 03-04 had have been fixed.

I just read this whole thread, mainly because i'm looking at the MR and the STi also. and from what I have read both cars "problems" wont happen as long as im not droppin the clutch at every launch. I mean when i take off from a light I am by no means just cruisin, i'm usually at 75% throtle in the s-10 and its fun but the only time i would ever consider droppin the clutch is at the strip and I rarely go. I'm more a fan of curves, which is why I like the Evo so far.

and the comment about the 05 stang was pretty funny...... yeah i would rather have a 95 mustang than the new one.... its the same inside

Hopefully i'll have an MR soon........

yea I chose STi *flamesuiton*
Ill go with the EVO if:

1. they raise the insurance on it around the time I purchase the STi
2. The 06's get that disgusting redesign

Im gonna wait till May/June to get a new car

don't get me wrong, but subaru has "wonderful" customer service problems too. they try to get out of fixing their weakest link on wrx's and sti's. The tranny. 8 out of 10 times when one is taken in for warranty tranny repairs, they'll tell you the damage was caused by abuse and won't pay to fix it. also, try not to get warranty work done with bald tires. Reason: some dealerships will say "you've obviously been racing so we won't cover the repairs of blah blah blah. I wouldn't believe it either except i was at subaru when they told my friend exactly that.

i own an 04 sti and am considering trading it in on an 05 gsr.
can't justify to myself the extra $$$ for an mr.

likes about the sti:
torque, lots of it. and with basic bolt-ons and em it has a solid 310-320 ft-lbs of TQ-goodness.
driving position (not seats, although i'm a bit portly so they're not too bad)
solid feel of the tranny and clutch even after 24k miles of spirited driving and at least 50 clutch drops from 4500-6500 rpm's (launch experimenting i call it)
interior
shifter feel. i have shifter bushings and short shifter and i love the feel. it's not ultra short, light, and smooth like an s2k but this car has power and i don't expect the shifter to feel like it's controlling a torqueless go-kart

dislikes about the sti:
1. steering compared to evo. it's not as numb as stock but i've added steering rack bushings, but the ratio just isn't there.
2. seats, even though my added weight fits the sti just fine, i like the wrap-around feel of the recaros even though the plaid just screams 'cheesy'
3. boxer rumble: @ first i liked it's uniqueness, but when you realize what causes the engine to sound this way (unequal length header) and the thoretical drawbacks to such a design it makes me disappointed. fwiw, the spec-c in japan uses equal length manifold and a twin scroll turbo which the usdm sti does not.
4. mod potential: the 2.5 makes excellent torque as mentioned, unfortunately the non-forged pistons are a weakpoint @ or near the 400 whp mark
not much in the way of cam upgrades with the use of avcs on the sti.
head-work is extremely costly and lack of parts available make it tough to increase the redline much to compensate for such short gearing, which i will mention
mod choices are just far greater for the evo. i still question the decision to go with the 2.5l in only the usdm.
5. gearing; @ stock or bolt on levels 1st gear is over by the time you have released the clutch, 2nd gear is only a sneeze long. 3 & 4 are nicely spaced but 5 is wasted as almost an overdrive gear and is so far above 4 that it has led to some grinding issues on the syncros. it's tough to shift fast into 5th @ redline, which leads to nasty grinding or slow 1/4 mile times.
6. the wing; it's hideous compared to the evo wing. i will def swapit out in favor of kaminari cf adjustable if i keep the car
7. understeer; yes i've cured some of it.
8. ability to swallow very wide tires. 235 seems to be close to the limit on normal suspension. some 245's are ok, but most require fender rolling
9. lack of wheel choices. 05 cured that by switching to 5x114
10. stock turbo; tiny vf39 doesn't hold boost well past 5500rpm, and is maxed out @ or near the 300-310 whp mark
and don't get me started on turbo location! ever wonder why wrx's or sti's can't make close to the same power on 16/18/and 20g mitsu turbos? look at the ridiculous turbo configuration!
11. stock fuel system is maxxed @ similair levels (small injectors) and they're way overpriced for upgrades. side feed injectors not as efficient as top feeds either iirc.

man i think i'm talking myself into a trade here soon...

Evo is the best by far, second choice would be Dodge SRT-4, then Sti.

I'm in the same boat - EVO or STi. I've been wavering for sometime now and I think the MR is my choice. Sure there were problems with trannys and such but they seem to be linked to the 03 production. Mitsubishi is definitely in the pits but like all car companies that were once there - they eventually get sorted out.

Who am I trying to fool - as someone said earlier - mitsu sucks but the evo rocks.
