What the hell is up with all these evo mishaps? i posted earlier, i'm the owner of a model 03 350z ,the first year it came out, and it didn't have anything wrong with ti, now i'm having second thoughts about this evo thing,

whats up with the clutch? how many times can you agressively launch the car before getting a new one?

tranny grinding?

Ok, are the 05 models gonna have these problems??

[QUOTE=34Turbo]Several points to consider...

5) Subaru dealerships are not as **** about warranty as Mitsu dealers are. As a matter of fact you will get a one year FREE subscription to the SCCA circuit... Mitsu dealers supporting rally events... Not a chance... If you even get your pic taken near one your warranty will probably be voided...

True they do offer the SCCA subscription but they also will void your warranty if you use it just like . Check out the Suby boards and you will many posts about it.

Ive test driven both cars...05 EVO GSR and 05 STi
I like both
however, Im leaning a bit towards an STi

Ive been reading about all the "problems" with the EVO's
mainly clutches...very few TC's and grinding trannies...but thats mainly on the 03's oh and not to mention Mitsu and its great customer service and wonderful warranty...or lack thereof
Im gonna wait until spring and see how the 05 EVO's are doing in regard to the clutch and tranny and then make my decision and then its still not a clear cut decision
like I said..void warranties and financial trouble are some main reasons Im shying away from Mitsu

anyone know anything about the 05 EVO's in regard to the clutch, tranny and TC's?

on the other hand, the STi...havent heard anything bad except for the fact that its a bit harder to extract power from the 2.5L

Reasons for wanting an STi:

Pros:
2.5L
stout 6-spd tranny
300hp(wooptiefreakindoo)
boxer sound
DCCD

Cons:
Seats suck
I need armrest extension
Power Potential

Reasons for wanting EVO:

Pros:
Handling
Power Potential
Seats
Advans
4g63...nuff said

Cons:
Clutch failures
TC Failures
Trannies grinding
Mitsu voiding warranties
Mitsu in financial trouble

so help me figure it all out
and yes I know Im on an EVO board but lets put that aside for now
so VOTE!!!..

TIA
You pretty much layed it all out in your own post. I would point you to the "cons" section of the EVO list. These are BIG cons. I have had several problems with my Evo and if I had it to do over again I would have NOT bought an Evo. I have ridden in both cars and the Subie just feels "tighter" if that means anything to you. It feels like a more-solidly-built car. I am not that happy with my Evo, but my top reasons for not liking it are just personal and wouldnt really apply to you. Just remember this: Dont get all stressed out about which car to get. Im sure you will like either one you get...and also remember what the choice itself is: "Which cool-*** car do I wanna get" Its not like you are choosing between a lime-green Kia and a pink metallic focus.

Since you have test driven both, was the Evo and 05 like you want to purchase? I only ask because of the new addition of ACD and FLSD to the 05's will be different than an 03 or 04. You might wanna check one out. As you can tell I made the choice for the Evo in every magazine test the Evo has been on top as the better car in all aspects. But it's you decision in the end.

STI tighter then maybe something was way wrong with your Evo every Sti I have been in or driven is way softer ride than the Evo and feels like a pig with understeer and handling and general ride compared to the Evo.

For what it's worth, I love my EVO. I've had it since March of 03, and put almost 10000 miles on it. There have been no big problems, but this is an extremely high performance car, and with that things will be different than a normal car. If you take care of either car, they will last. I vote for the the EVO, and I did test drive the STi, as well as the RX8, and hands down the EVO made me marvel the most. A lot of the problems you have heard about need some questioning as to how the car was driven. You can't beat on ANY piece of mechanical equipment and expect it to last.....

I'm one heck of a subaru fan...but I'm considering the Evo over the STi just because it has lots of potential and great handling...on a side note i am reconsidering (again) after the numerous posts about clutch failure, TC, etc. etc. STi's have quite an amount of potential...I've seen videos of STi's running 11's...hey it may take a few $$$$'s just to get there but honestly...with either car you'd still be spending money...a lot too for that matter. My reason as to why i am reconsidering...the most obvious being the tranny, clutch, etc. I wouldnt want to dish out the extra cash for a new tranny or clutch...not to mention the down time in which you'd have to wait just to get it put in...Dont get me wrong guys both cars are awesome but it seems like the cons for the evo are much greater than that of the STi...oh and by the way...the STi transmission for the 05 is A LOT better than the 04s...read reviews on the MR and STi they almost always say that subaru made a huge improvement on the tranny for the 05 models...Now for the Evo...really...the cars got SOOOO much potential and looks...well thats pretty much self explanatory...but the extra for the transmission or just buying a new clutch just because you know yours might fail soon is well...somewhat a big issue...for me at least...but hey im not here to tell you what and what not to buy...its really up to you man. You cant go wrong on either car....its all on preference...Im stuck in your dilemma also...Sometimes i want the evo...sometimes i want the STi...heck maybe i should just buy both! haha...only time will tell...good luck on your choice....

if ur a power and handling freak.. then dont worry about warranty most of us voided our warranty within a month or 2 of owning our cars. as far as reliability.. the 4g63 is almost unbreakable.. the clutch.. i wonder why it dies... countless clutch drops at 7k rpm??? what do u expect? of course it goes.. then its time to get a twin plate. The tranny is incredibly strong.. provided u dont misshift and grind gears. u are only gonna spend more money trying to make an sti handle like a stock evo. then u have to get arround the fact that the engine is not nearly as stout. looks are entirely subjective so no one can tell u which one looks better although that black color with glod flakes is pretty hot and yeah the evo is incredibly more tight than the sti. the thing has a luxury sedan suspension and understeers out of driveways.

You can get STI's to run 11's but that is only possibly witha turbo upgrade and a lot of $$ like you said. There many Evo's in the 11's on stock turbo's. As for the clutch I know of5 local guys all in the 400hp mark with stock clutch with anywhere from 12k to 54k mileage . If you dont launch the car at Every red light or make some monster hp your stock clutch is fine. Plus the 05's from what I have heard will be a lot better.

Honestly I think your pros and cons are very well said. I think you have been doing your research. I would still lean toward the evo. I think it depends on how much you can afford. If you plan to mod and spend money get the evo. If you want to just buy it and leave it buy the sti.

My advice climb under both vehicles and look at the construction. Notice the difference in materials in the interior and exterior. Listen to the motors at both idle and on the road. Finally as much as I like driving up and down HW 138 in Ca. Most of the time I am going somewhere else and the razor sharp potential of the evo is wasted. What becomes apparent is the Lancer origins of its passenger compartment, what a miserable place to spend you fun time. No amount of carbon fiber ad ons are going to help it out. Now if you have a G35 coupe or something nice to spend most of your time in buy an Evo, tear out the insides weld the seams and install a set of sparco's.

Flame away

does anyone have an 04 sti- also test driven the 05 sti? I heard that a lot of the probs w/ the 04, they fixed on the 05- also, the 05 sti is dupposed to have a much better interior. I picked the 05 gsr cause I hate the boxer sound when uncorked. I've heard that you can make it better w/ unequal length headers but it they sound too much like a Volkswagon bug (old flat four ones) for my taste. also, i didn't like the big hood scoop imparing my vision. Subaru does seem to have a lot more dealers than mitsu so it's easier and cheaper to get sti- Here in hawaii, you can get an sti below msrp cause there ae 5 dealers. their is only one mitsu dealer( one on maui too but i'm talking about oahu). That is why i had to get my car from california.- in essence, the evo is more rare- sti's are soo common here in hawaii that nobody notices it anymore.

True...I think its all on how you drive the car...you dont abuse it you wont end up paying for it in the end...but heck with the STI you could launch that thing all day and not have to worry so much about it...but something is bound to go out no matter what...i think IM sticking with Evo...its cheaper too! i think you guys have convinced me enough that if i dont drive the car like i stole it...*at least from a stop light*...i should be fine... Cheers!

i dont think its that bad with mitsu and their warranties honestly (btw i dont work for them) cuz there are a lot of ppl who just go out and abuse the car and expect mitsu to pay for the damages they caused. a lot of ppl say that "mitsu needs to take more responsibility with their customers" but as someone else said on this forum, "ppl need to take more responsibility with their cars". but dont get me wrong, there are always those certain dealerships that dont kno what a warranty is. you would think ACURA would have a good warranty system right? some guy on clubrsx was getting his warranty voided because he had a mod. an aftermarket SHIFTKNOB!!! now thats just wrong. but as i was saying, like most other companies, if your gonna mod your car, your gonna say goodbye to your warranty. just keep your car stock and dont abuse the car if you dont want your warranty out the door. but of course you were saying earlier about wanting to fix it up, which is totally awesome. but im sure subaru would reject your warranty as well if you fixed up the sti. and im pretty sure the engine is reliable. i used to be scared about this whole reliability/warranty issue myself. but hey its your money, your choice. just trying to show that mitsu isnt as **** as it is projected. but both cars are awesome.

oh yea, as for my choice, i would get an evo, just cuz of some small reasons, price, looks, and independent car. what i mean by independent is like there is no other trim of this car. an evo is just an evo. theres no other versions like dx, ex, base, etc etc. such as the wrx and wrx sti, and the honda trims. you kno what i mean? you sometimes confuse the car of what trim it is and after a while, the highest trim just seems to be a fixed up version of the cheaper trim. lancer doesnt really count, cuz its totally diff from the evo (almost opposite) looks and performance totally differ from each other. the wrx on the other hand has the 2.5 rs, wrx, and sti. all have almost same look, one turbo is bigger than the other..you get the idea. so in all, the evo is unique. it is its own car. if someone else has an evo, they have an evo, not evo dx (less hp) evo rx (blahblah) exo photon (you get the idea) but now im just remembering about the MR that came out. but the engine specs are the same unlike other cars. so have fun choosing! sorry for long post and if it got repetitive at any point.
