Cam gears won't do that much by themselves ... but ... for example if you go with a slightly more agressive setup like HKS 272/272 cams, then the camgears allow you to adjust them independently from each other. For example a -4i/-1e setting on the 272 cams will give you better top end and stock-like idle. Cam gears basically allow you to fine-tune where your camshafts will make power, allowing you to move the powerband by a few hundred rpms in either direction, as a side-effect, it also happens to affect your idle quality (better or worse, depending on how you have them adjusted).
