Yo,

So is there anything that breaks on these things, common problems to be aware of? My greatest fear is to buy one that had been beaten by a ricer. I am thinking of getting an Evo or STI, whichever has the right price and condition. I would prefer an Evo so I ask here first.

I currently drive a really built 88 Supra turbo, so I know my way around a turbo car. Unfortunately, I bought a condo and no longer have the garage space and room for fixing/upgrading like I used to back home. I need something more practical. Right now I run 3"-3.5" exhaust piping straight through, no resonators or anything. Let's just say everyone in my AND the neighboring two condo buildings hate me when I start my car. The car was built for the strip, and way too absurd for a daily driver.

That brings me back to my original concerns. Old supras had improperly torqued head gaskets and can get rod knock easily with minimal neglect. Anything like that happen on IXs? I am looking for any strange quriks, and or annoyances that could potentially snowball into major problems.

Also, what is a fair price range for these cars? I see some 03s going between $18-20K with 60K miles on them? Is that reasonable? How long do the engines last? What about the tranny? Diffs? Sorry for the long winded post.

All input is appreciated.

thanks

I am currently looking at buying an IX Evo MR and after doing two different history reports i came to a dilema... Carfax said the engine was a 2.0L L4 FI DOHC and autocheck said the engine was a 2.0L I4 ECI-MULTI / EFI. Is this something i should be concerned about before purchasing the car? I have seen alot of advertisements where alot evo have been advertised as MR's but are actually not i just want to make sure i dont fall for a fake MR and get scammed...
Ty for your time

good thred lot good info. just to let some of u to know when u buy your evo unless buy it new watch out on used evos make sure u put an a/f gage in. i bought mine used from a dealer had a few mods like upper and lower intercooler pipeing and boost controller, and cams. thats what the dealer told me. some time later the piston melted fell inito balance shaft and the balance shaft put it through the block. came to find out the ecu was tuned for high oct. fule.

tranny is most caused problem!! but just like beginning of thread says SEARCH is ur gewd frend!! check out the car fax report, go to mitsubishi dealership with vin# to see what have done to vehicle, check if bolts/clamps are loose so u can tell if it went through aftermarket parts!! but the most important part is ITS ALL ON LUCK!! u can find a bone stock evo but breaks down after a few years or months... or u can find one with hecka mods but lasts forever!! i would suggest finding a stock one though just like mine!!

Hey definately great thread, I just purchased my dream car EVO IX from my work place some guy traded it in and i just love it. I've come across mod after mod every week for the past two weeks that I have owned it but it doesnt seem abused, and has top name brand parts and handles drives great, I agree its all on luck but to me an EVO is an EVO its worth it either way, nothing compares to the feel and drive of one.

There, you are wrong sir! They mitsu modified the turbo housing halfway through the 06 model year and hence the 9.5...Look up turbo specs for them.
