trans Whines 1st gear
Hmmm........no. If the car is accelerating in 1st gear the clutch is just turning with the crankshaft and not in use. When you put your foot on the clutch pedal that stops the clutch from spinning so you can change gears. So unless you are accelerating and decelerating with your foot on the clutch pedal, the clutch would not be cause of the noise. In addition not everyone in this post claimed that the noise was as a result of a ACT install.
Any updates? I had very similar results after a bad launch in 1st gear. Was told by Shep this is a common complaint and can be fixed with a new input shaft and 1st gear. Also he said that it really doesn't cause any issues other then the crazy noise in 1st gear. Mine whines but I have lived with it for over a year now ... Not worried about it till I get a rebuild.
OP- don't feel bad. Got the car to 700 miles. Went to the track, had a terrible night in 90*+ 100% humidity, and really had to flog the car to get it to move. Then I ended up coming out too hard and spinning. Got home. Drove it the next day, and 1st just howled. I'd say about 4 times louder than before. I'm well aware of straight cut gear whine. My initial thought was TC. But then it should howl at speed, not just in first. Called a friend who's really good at breaking transmissions. (he says bearing / input shaft) Fabulous.
Same clutch, same scenario, less miles, more hp, same year car.
Although I don't think its so much clutch related - as it is the abuse from launching. I had a really nasty launch after bogging it twice. Got pissed, turned up the launch limiter. And left at 15-16psi or better. Spun the first 60-80ft. It just sat at 7000 for an eternity... as soon as it caught I went to second and it seemed ok. I made another pass, but second did not cooperate.
I have 35k on the clock.
I honestly don't care if it howls. As long as the gooey turning bits stay in the big shiny aluminum case.
Any of you guys opt for the 1st gear / input shaft replacement and have it come back after some hard launches?
