Question Unhappy with Exedy Clutch

I recently picked up my 03 Evo a couple weeks ago. The car came with a Exedy Stage2 clutch with only 3000 miles on it. The car is making about 360whp on pump gas, and this clutch does a great job of holding the power when opened up. But driving on it, is a pain in the ***. Driving in traffic is not fun at all, and it seems theirs no way to ease off the clutch without bogging or some type of rattling.

Does anyone else have any expierence with this clutch? Does it maybe need adjusting? Or should I be looking into a different clutch? Im currently Daily driving this car, and I mayb will visit a track, once a year.

Its just the nature of the beast since its a twin disk, either deal with it and learn how to drive it or put a single disk in and plan to buy clutches more often

Exedy Stage 2 is not a twin disk or am I mistaken...

Regardless of anything, u need to rev higher in order to slip a performance clutch and they are a pain in the *** in town, that's a fact.

Deal with it, but with 360whp don't even think about going back to a stock clotch unless u want to get a new one every month.

Its a 3 puck. Pucks are fun to drive - welcome to the Evo life.

But in all seriousness, it takes some time to master a puck clutch. Once you have it down, its easy to drive (I have a kevlar 4-puck F3.2 that I DD).

Yea I hear ya, I guess it comes with the territory of more power. I had a ACT 2600 in my old DSM, and that was easier to handle then this thing.

Get rid of the P.O.S. exedy junk and switch to an ACT clutch. My car has over 450 whp on pump gas and 500+ on methanol and it has the ACT clutch and flywheel and it shifts just like a factory clutch in traffic. OH, it has been in there over 3000 miles and just inspected and looks brand new. 360 hp is not alot of power and a basic clutch from ACT will be plenty for you, its also not the HP you need to be concerned about, but the torque. Torque will break a clutch, not HP.

true, but in general along with more HP comes more torque. Which ACT clutch are you using? To me 360awhp is alot for a DD, 500 is way to much for street use.

Thanks for the responses.

sorry about taking so long. It the HDSS with the streetlite flywheel. 360 is barely scraping the surface. There are alot of stock turbo, stock block evo's making 400+ at the wheels. Now I dont launch my car every day at 5500 RPM either. This is my daily, my other car is my civic. I get alot of flak about having a 700+ whp civic and a slower evo, but I wanted to build a civic for all the ghey little ricers who throw on fart pipes and try to race. But that cars a whole different story. My goal on the evo was to keep the stock block, maintain daily drivability and see what could be done. I am actually just now installing a set of Buddy Club 264 cams, HKS cam gears, and its going to AMS on the 8th of may for a final dyno tune. AMS said to expect about 550 at the wheels with my current setup. As for being too much for the street, I have a GT30R from Garrett and a Peakboost FTW kit. It spools a little slower than stock but its better that way with this much power since the stock turbos are almost instant spool. It spools about 400 rpms slower than the stocker so at 65-70 mph on the interstate if I need to pass around someone Its not really instant boost like the factory turbo. ESPECIALLY if I have to downshift.

agreed, as far as i know, the "Stage 2" is a 3-puck. I think they call the twin disk the "Stage 4". so if u think the 3-puck is bad, dont even think about the twin disc.

in any case, i have the Exedy Twin (on an Evo with just 340awhp), and good gosh, it is a nightmare to daily drive, especially if you drive in the city/traffic. the initial engagement is rough, jerky, and loud. its as if im wrestling with the stick, each time i start moving from a standstill, and i have to rev it up to ~2000rpm or else risk bogging/stalling.... when downshifting from any gear, at any speed, have to keep the revs up, or else feel a jerk, and hear the same nasty sound of metal plates "shaving" against each other.... plus, if u r rolling in traffic, unlike a stock clutch, it doesnt let you roll in 1st, at 5mph, and causes the car to bogg/stall.... so, must constantly shift in and out of neutral, when in 'stop-go' traffic...

so lets see, its very rough, difficult to engage, loud, and twice or even 3 times as expensive as any ACT clutch....
just about the only thing that keeps me from ripping it out of the car and chopping it into pieces it is the thought that I can go to any track, launch as many times as i want, abuse it all i can, and never need to buy a new disc

like they said every clutch when you get into power is going to be chattery. i have the twin disk hd and i have no problems with it, the peddle is alot harder to push down but nothing i cant handle. If you cant handle there puck style then stick to the hp level your at.

I myself used an exedy(organic disk) a while back and it flat out sucked im using an act 6 puck now and LOVE IT.... but maybe to help some of your problems i would suggest maybe doing a front motor mount, and clutch lines(both upper and lower).

Its not about not being able to handle it, Ive had numerous heavy duty clutches, but regardless, engangment should be somewhat reasonable to deal with. Who the hell wants to daily drive something thats gonna give them constant headaches. I think the clutch was having issues before becuase the car sat all winter or maybe Ive finally gotten use to it, its easy as hell to drive now. I had an ACT 2600 on my talon and couldnt stand it. But Im sure their are plenty of people that love it. To each their own.

The old saying "no pain, no gain" is for the idiots that were to stupid to use logic over brute force. Its like weight lifting, you would be a complete idiot to go into the gym everyday and always max out. Same with clutches, just becuase its an easy clutch to drive on, doesnt mean it cant handle abuse.
