EVO 9 SE or EVO 9 MR?

Hey guys,

Im a total newb to the Evolution. Im pretty set on buying an Evo 9, however, I am stuck between getting a MR or a standard EVO 9. As far i know, the MR is a 6 spd and the standard is a 5 spd. The MR has an overall better acceleration stock for stock.

I have a friend that has a MR with cosworth cams and a exhaust and he loves it. I rode in it and was totally blown away on how fast it was. My questions is...will a MR always be faster than a standard EVO 9 with the same modifications? What are the benefits in getting a standard EVO 9 over a MR? Price isn't really an issue... but which car is better for modifications?

Patrick

My rsx was used for drag racing and unfortunately I am tired of that LOL. I really want to go into doing track events and learning how to turn my car. Hence the reasoning for an Evo.

Definitely an SE if you are going to track, if not it makes little difference. The MR 6-spd is slightly weaker when hammering on 4th (5th and 6th if you are really cranking). Its thinner and can shatter more easily. However, the MR has a slight suspension advantage with better dampers but that can easily be cured by some cheap springs, used or new bilstein struts.. No the MR does not have an advantage in acceleration, the 5-spd actually has the lower gearing and will have an ever so slight advantage to 60 if thats your concern (pretty negligible though).

Even though this is the newbie forum, this question has been asked many times. Before you jump into the pool with all the sharks, try the search button (I know its crap )

Your decision should depend on how you plan to use the car. For drag racing or high horsepower, you'll want the 5 speed. For a nice mildly tuned car, the MR is nice.

The engine in these two cars is identical, but in certain situations the 6 speed will feel faster.

Hope that helps a little.

Can't go wrong with either one really. This is what I would consider:

-MR has a 6speed. This is nice for the highway, but if you plan on modding this 6speed has been known to give people problems (with decent abuse and lots of HP). Although, someone is going to chime in here and say that the 6speed problems are way overblown (and they may be, but nevertheless that tranny seems to be more fragile than the standard 5 speed)

-SE has the 5speed. This tranny is pretty sturdy and can take abuse as long as you use the correct fluid and match it with a proper clutch for your needs.

The difference in acceleration, if it exists, is negligible. I would research these boards for at least a few weeks so you can explore the options

Thanks for the info dude. That's the reason why I posted here in THIS section LOL. I tried searching once a few minutes ago..but got lazy so i made this thread. You guys are actually nice...i came from clubrsx where newbs are flamed 24/7 there (however im an OG member there).

Back on topic...i suppose people buy the MR knowing there not going to modify it or just to say u have a "MR"? You actually made me swing towards getting a SE. SWEEET I've seen more people trying to sell WHITE se's haha. Maybe i can actually find one in that color.

I've been thinking of buying an EVO for 2 yrs...but never did any research until the last week. Let's just say i graduated from college and landed my dream job...hahah. I've always wanted a 9...so i plan on getting one. I will definitely look into the tranny issues for both. I will definitely be going to track events to learn turning. Im done with dragging..haha.

Newbs get flamed everywhere by angry people posting at work, or at least that's my theory.

I can't speak for everyone but I'll always do my best to keep things civil, polite, and most importantly ON TOPIC. I haven't posted much here on EvoM, but I've been a member since 05 and can tell you without question that the members here are indeed less flame happy than many other forums.

/offtopic and back on topic-

You should have a good idea of the difference between the two cars now since it's not hard to grasp. The trans is really the bulk of what sets them apart, assuming you plan to mod things here and there.

Let us know how it goes.

Your going to be looking for a while, Mitsu didn't make any white SE's. SE only came in Black, Gray and Silver.

there you go i was about to say the se only came in those color. Just curious OP how about a evo 8. there are some monster 8s around here. Some for drag and some for track. Im building mine for both uses mostly track cause that seems funner to me. Once i break in the 10s my dragging career will be over lol. I can see how you dont want a 8 you want the mivec or low miles but if your going the built engine route it really does not matter about miles at that point. just asking

well i've got an 06 IX MR with 125k miles on it, just put my second clutch in it (stocker went at 70k, and the exedy stage 1 that replaced it went at around 123k). i've got an ACT HDSS and streetlite flywheel in it now. mods are in my sig, but i've beat on this car daily on the street, on the drag strip, on the road course, and autocrossing, and i have yet to have any problems with the transmission. the reason the 6 speed gets such bad press is because nobody makes posts about their transmission unless something goes wrong with it.
