Which do you do?

Before and after i first started to drive the evo, I got tips from many ppl on how to drive stick. All of the info was helpful and sounded the same, but I'm confused on a certain part. When come to a stop or a hard turn i was told two different thing. first was to go to neutral and then shift to the right gear if or when i needed to. The second was to down shift to 3rd or 2nd and if i need to stop then go to neutral. Sofar I've been going to neutral and then picking the gear when or if needed most of the time. What do you think is better?

When you're doing turns, you want to shift into the proper gear so you can actually make use of the AWD to control your car as you power through the turn.

In an emergency stop situation you go into neutral because you don't want to stall the engine locking up the brakes.

i always use neutral, to me its just much easier, you use less gas and less wear on the clutch..

In basic driving in stop and go traffic I'll put it into neutral. However I see your point being easier on the clutch, but downshifting is easier on those pricey brake pads...

I agree with wiretap...you don't want to lose traction on a turn in neutral, because then you won't have the ability to correct it with the AWD.

Also, if you run into an emergency situation with another car coming at you head on, or an obstacle in the road where you need to react immediately, you'd want to be in gear as opposed to neutral so you can get out of the way.

The way I look at it, brake pads are cheaper than putting wear & tear on your cluth/tranny. I just put it in neutral when I come to a stop at light, but in turns depending on how fast im going, I usually go with 2nd or 3rd gear.

I love down shifting into 2nd getting on on ramps and go 80 before you get on the highway ;D then when you get off downshifting on the off ramp (makes me feel like a race car driver) NEVER downshift at any rpm's above 4500 for daily driving not pretty and almost never downshift into first! these are the rules I drive by. BIG brakes are your friend when you have to stop short drop her in neutral and just glid3 out of harms way!

That's what I do.. it's considered neutral since you aren't in gear.

For me the car is always in gear. The only time I go into neutral is when I'm stopped and trying to relax my left foot if I've been in traffic.

Otherwise, I'm always in gear.

Hahaha why not more than 4500 rpm? As long as I keep it below 7800 rpm its very pretty on downshifts.

same here, you want to be able to move if necessary and not take another split second to shift.
