I use the Escort 8500 runs just under 300 bucks and has saved me at least a dozen times. When I bought it (2 years ago) It was rated by Car and driver as well as Automobile magazines as the best radar detector on the market. ITs worked great for me and tracks up to 8 different signals at once which is nice covers X ban K ban and Ka ban as well as laser. the X50 is just the new model of what I have. This might also be a good article to check out.

I got my Passport 8500 for $200, so it was a much better bargain over the V1. I've also compared them side by side on long road trips before. Overall, V1 is very useful with the arrows, but by far detected much more false alarms. They both are very good though.
Valentine One - expensive and soooooo worth it, but don't think it gives you some sort of imunity. The best way to avoid a ticket is to use your brain and eyes and be aware. A detector helps, be it's no silver bullet.
Having said all that, just keep a tally of the times that the V1 alerts you when you would have been nailed without it - the 'return on investment' is huge.

I've had k-40's, Escort 8500s, and a V1 in that order. The k-40 was by far the least impressive. The 8500 and V1 both were better in some areas than others. I think the 8500 may get Ka a bit further out than my V1. That being said, my V1 never falses (I turned off x-band since Okie cops RARELY use it). It hits a few wal-marts, but so did my 8500. The features of the V1 outweigh the 8500, and I enjoy the knobs, auto-dimming, chirps, and oh ya, the Arrows!
If price is an issue, get an 8500 until it starts 'self calibrating' all the time like four of my 8500's did after about a year of use. Then get the V1.

V1 for sure. Had it for a few years now and every year it still dominates radar tests in like Car and Driver and others. Patented arrows are really the way to go. Yea its 400 but its a radar and you can get teh software upgraded if it changes significantly so its something you can have for a long time from car to car. Check Ebay, you see some 100 cheaper or so when they're available.
