getting an electric car this early in time would make it easier to steal electricity too. There really aren't people who are looking at someone plugging their car into the gas station socket when you go in for a drink. I'm sure in 10 years when the cars are actually out there that people will put locks on the sockets or do something about it.
But right now you could cruise around everywhere for free! Even if it wasn't free it's still only 10$ to get a full charge on that Tesla.
I'd get that car if I had better faith in batteries. Right now; I hate rechargable batteries!!

yes the days of using gas for commuting are coming to an end, there will always be a demand for gas in Motorsports and enthusiast applications but I believe the daily drivers will be moving away from gas very soon.
I saw a Honda commercial last night for a hydrogen cell car kinda made me believe it was going into production sometime soon????

Honda does have a "hydrogen" powered car that they are introducing. GM has their version of the electric car in testing as well in several cities. BMW has already had a hydrogen powered 6 or 7 series I can't remember which.
The problem with all-electric cars... they aren't the end all salvation that most proclaim. That energy has to come from somewhere to move the car.... the pollution source is just farther from the user at a power plant burning coal, oil, gas, nuclear, etc. The US has a relatively overworked power grid (Cali folks love the rolling brownouts I hear) and transitioning from gas to electric cars would require more energy and a better distribution system.
Couple those two factors together with the pollution from production of electricity and you'll see your electric bills shooting up as they try to cover the increased usage and upgrade capacity. Pollution, capacity issues, and transmission issues are still the reasons why electric cars would be at best a stop gap measure in the short term.
Keep in mind this is all my opinion.
