"RS or "MR" Model??
I would have to say the RS becuase its cost so little and with the money left over if can kill an MR any day with the few grand you have IMO also I would take the RS becuase it has no wing and the cops would really not pay attention to you as much as an MR.,but to tell you the truh I would rather have the wing on.......
I just drove the White MR yesterday and WOW.The power you feel when you hit third gear.I like the vortex genegators and the ACD switch on the inside.Gauge cluster is a little small for me but it fits nice blow the AC.I had to get used to the new light weight BBS wheels, but the car is one hot looking ride.I still love my Taramac Black 03 EVO with my mods on it. 2.43 seconds 0-60....You just have to try not look too much in hte extra 5,000 on the sticker.
As someone who has road raced since 2000 and who drove an EVO RS with a Mueller suspension, I would go with the RS. Here are my reasons:
1. Lighter weight. I know that the RS is not lighter by a lot (88 lbs), but every lb counts in road racing. Moreover, the RS has the undercarpet tar already stripped from the factory so there is no need to strip it whne the time comes to turn the car into a full road racing car.
2. 5-speed gear box. In road racing the fewer shifts you make, the fewer mistakes (mis-shifts) you make. 6 gears increase the possiblity of having to shift into fifth gear on the fornt straights of some road courses. With five gears it is less likely that you have to shift into fifth. Lesser shifts reduce error and reduces your track time. The gear ratios on the five speed box were PERFECT. I had a blast driving the EVO on the track at BurronWillow. I do not want the shorter gears of the MR. Moreover, the 6-speed, according to Mitsu, does not give better gas mileage than the 5 speed.
3. So it comes down to the MR inverted Belistin shocks, variable wipers, HID lights/fog lights, power window/door locks and stereo. Are they worth the $7000 in extra cash. No for me. With the extra money I can get a Mueller JIC coilover that will give me a choice of spring rates, ride height, camber/caster adjustment and still have money left over. The struts are also rebuildable later on. I would have liked to have door locks and a stereo though. I might opt to get these installed later on. With the left over money, I can get an exhaust and intake to help the car breath better.
4. I hate wings. I like the EVO w/o the wing so much better than with the wing. It is the ultimate sleeper and attracts less attention from the cops than a car with a big wing.

However the 6-speed I think is a good addition for road racing. The only down side I see is the slight increase in weight.
The lower 3 gears are very close to the current 5 speed. Fourth is slightly lower and the new fifth plugs the large existing gap between the 5 speeds fourth and fifth. Sixth is only a little taller than the current fifth. I would say that on many road courses the six speed may work better.

The MRs have been out for a while now and I own one.
If you are going to compete and mainly compete, get the RS, 100 pounds is a huge difference even in daily driving. if you are going to use the car mainly as transportation and shows, get the MR edition. If you are short in funds, get the RS with air and add your own system in it if you must.
The RS will be slightly faster than the MR because it is definitely a lot lighter. The RS benefitted from the same structures that made the MR light and they are, aluminum roof, fender. The RS gets the same engine, ACD, mechanical front and read limited slip diffs as do all 05 models.
The RS does however comes with a 5 speed tranny which really does not matter in terms of performance.
6 speed trans, aluminum roof. my vote is for the MR how ever whether the difference in price is worth it i would say yes. as far mods go the MRs will be the true winner in the long run with the 6 speed gearing.
If you want hardcore and the best of what the Evo is about, get the RS. I could make a case for either the '04 or '05...my preference was the '04 sans abs and active diff.
If you want something a little "upscale" gt the GSR with sun&sound...tight little car.
I do like the MR, don't get me wrong...IMHO not worth the $$$$$$ without a worthwhile HP boost.

.... Anyway, I prefer the comfort of the MR so I'd vote MR even before I got it....
