My conversation with Mitsu USA Product Planning re: the MR EDITION
"The corner is as strange to Americans as a small meal or a president who can spell." - Top Gear '04

I've got to get State Farm...I pay so little with Geico ($477.30 for six months on an Evo...that's comp/collision and increased liability to $300,000!!) I have a hard time paying for any other insurance. Still, with Geico, I know that if I ever were to be on a racetrack they'd deny anything and if I ever make a claim, they'll likely drop me.

Maybe SCC can get involved and paint an MR in some grill paint.

As soon as the October issue of "Motor Trend" goes on sale in the first week of September.

Too Cold Scopio, what kind of event was this and what track?

1. The events I do are timed competitive events - and insurance IS a problem. Crashed MR = bye bye $35G.
2. My modified Sentra has 2.0 twin cam with decent engine and suspension mods and I'm not sure you appreciate how well this car can perform.
I think I've run better times than at least 1/2 the Evo's that have come out to participate. Sometimes they run better, sometimes I run better. WRX's I eat for lunch most of the time(5 out of the 7 to be exact last weekend).
Out of 13 cars in my class only one car was faster last weekend - an twin turbo AWD S-4 running monster slicks.
3. Improving my driving skill on the track is my main goal - not necessarily having the best car.
4. You might be surprised how often I can get to 8/10, 9/10 on the street
(can you say on ramp?)
You just have to use your head, turn it down a notch if there's traffic around, and exercise good judgement. I've had no major incidences. Fear not - this MR will be driven the way it ought to be
. 5. I'd like to hold out as long as I can, but you are right - by the time the paint / (warranty) fades - the Evo will surely end up on the track. Maybe even sooner
Thanks Ron. I am asking becuae all too often I see folks driving 911 Turbos out to our local playground for men and run their Miata's around. I don't dare run a car any where how I run a car on the track in public. Granted some still think I run "hard" around town, but it's nothign like the 10-11/10ths out on the track. I am in the same boat having an underdog to play with out on the track. I run the slocas around and if there are a few people I'm not out braking and ready to over run through the twisities, I break out the slicks and then only the big HP Trans Am/GT1/500+HP street cars (ahem) on slicks and with cages, coilovers, 15" brakes, etc can get away. usually only down the straights.
My difficulty in wrapping my brain around the logic is with any car you drive on the street you may get a few brief moments to run it 7/10s. Plus on the street why not go for maximum comfort, gas mileage, convenience ( easy getting in and out of, room to throw in a big TV, lawn mower, engine, drivetrain part, tools, etc ) and have a great fun toy for the track is as appropriate for the track as a daily driver is for public roads?
Again I am just trying to understand it and see if there is something I am missing.
My difficulty is wth the cost of performance stuff that goes unused. Sitting in traffic with $200 a pop tires and $1500 coilovers and such, and your not going any faster sitting in traffic or any more comfortable, pieces are being worn away and you don't get a chance to fully use them..
On the track, I'm all about each car going full tilt and it's great to see any car running awesome laps, and always depressing to see GT3s putzing around and poorly driven.
Again, Thanks for your response, I'm just trying to understand the thought process behind it, then again maybing I'm just getting old and lazy and prefer to have things more comfortable and convenient then edgy..

It does sicken me to see highperformance cars Sunday cruising along in the hands of posers. Such cars are meant to be driven. Interestingly enough most Evo's probably won't see any track use, but I'll bet their owners will enjoy the hell out of them. Fact is we spend much more time driving off track than on, so maybe its not that crazy to want to drive the "funner" car as a daily driver ?!
My original plan was to replace the Sentra with the MR on track - it makes sense to me too, so I'm not at all surprised at your reaction. But after reevaluating my personal situation I decided it was better to keep my warranty in tact for a while - especially since, despite what you might think, I'll probably have just as much fun on track with the Sentra. It's all about driving and driving skill for me - what I drive is crucial - but secondary.
Thanks for your insight Ron, Both cars sound fun. and I completely understand driving *ANY* car at 10+/10ths is fun. I enjoy wringing out everything from the 100hp FWD slocus to 500AWHP full on slicked Evos. Some cost a lot more per lap, but hanging either over the limit is just as rewarding.
