Want to ask an opinion. Clutches....

I have an 05 Evo VIII MR. Clutch is going, and its getting hard to shift into reverse while care is running. Car also shakes if i try to go into gear too slow or too fast. I have looked through the website to find a topic that closely relates this one, but i havent found one. Maybe over-looked it. I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea on what exactly is going on with this car. I has a lot of potential and i dont want to get rid of it. Also. Which clutch would you prefer? Clutch masters or ACT. And with the flywheel. Should i just replace it or just have it checked? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have it checked out first if it is actually the clutch or the tranny. ACT OR
clutch masters shouldn't be your next step in clutches. Try to get something like a HKS twin disk or something up that line; exedy, ect.

I know that the clutch is going bad just because it wants to pull while the clutch is pressed in no matter where its adjusted to. I have changed every oil in that car. I have never found any metal shavings in it what so ever. Someone borrowed it while i was on deployment and ran the ATF for the clutch dry to where all three lights came on. Thats when it started to rattle, and it sounds like something is smacking the flywheel.

You can also do a load test on your clutch by e.g. finding a hill on a freeway, put it in 6th gear, then stand on the throttle aggressively, and see if the clutch grabs immediately or the clutch slips a little under load. My clutch has just started to slip ... on the freeway, at 3k rpm, if I stand on the throttle for a second or two, the clutch slips and the revs go up to about 4k rpm, before coming back down 3.5k rpm without getting off the throttle (i.e. it seems to slip about 500 rpm initially on throttle tip in under load). Incidentally, my clutch has also started to chatter some of the time when I pull away from a stop slowly.

Since I need to replace my clutch as well, I have down a fair amount of research on Evo clutches over the last week or two. Based on my research, for my intended use (daily driver, planned 400+ wtq upgrade path, w/ planned 10 HPDE/track events / year), I have decided to go for:

- ACT XT 3200 lb. extreme pressure plate
- ACT SD solid hub organic disc (not advertised on ACT's web site)
- Road///Race Engineeering (RRE) flywheel
- OEM throw out bearing
- clutch line

Read this:
http://www.socalevo.net/index.php?op...776#msg7482776

And the bottom of this post from Mike W @ RRE for his recommendation for a streetable clutch that can take some abuse and hold a decent amount of power:
http://www.socalevo.net/index.php?op...990#msg7490990

Also I believe Mauricio at Massimo Power now recommends ACT XT pressure plate + ACT SD solid hub organic disc for many customers too.

If your sticking with bolt ons go with the act hd ss cltuch. I run that in my mr and love it. A little more pedel pressure but nothing rediculous. A hks or exedy multi-disk clutch is overkill for bolt ons. Just make sure to use the oem throwout bearing no the one that comes with the act clutch.
