Custom Ram Air

Ok fellas, I'm looking for opinions/questions/concerns/critizism of my current idea. Lemme lay in on you all.

The gist of it:
My plan is to run tubing of some sort (more than likely dryer vent) from each of the lower side openings on the fron bumper to a plate directly underneth the filter on my SRI. Road debris should be taken care of by the mesh on the bumper, the mesh ill put on the other side of the tube (near the filter) and by the filter intself. My only concern is rain. In my opinion, i do see it as a problem , unless I was to drive thru a huge lake-sized puddle. Any comments on that?

Does it seem to anyone that this may or may not be a good idea?

Even if you had a completely sealed attachment to your intake on one end, there is NO WAY you're going to suck water up a tube that high. I think it should work fine. Weapon-R sells their own "system" that is basically the same exact thing. Only differences are: Color of hose, direct attachment to their shielded intakes, Ram air funnel for the bottom of the tubing, and of course COST. I think that add-on they sell goes for about 80 bucks.

No I think it would be fine.....I did this same setup back in the day on an nissan altima. Seems like the same type of set up you are thinking of doing. What I used for tubing was a blue colored, flex hose from Home depot...I believe I chose some type of spa hose seeing it was rated for a good temp. I ran this from where the stock fog lights would be installed and built and used an havc type funnel. Didnt look too ghetto because it was hidden behind the fascia. I then ran the hoes up to a the SRI. I live in Seattle, as you know it rains alot here and I never had any trouble with water. Not sure if the mod actually did anything but hey I had fun doing it and it cost me less than 25 bux and an hour or so for the installation.

I've been toying with the same idea. Found some hose and a old a/c vent from a pick-up. Gonna try to work out something when my RRM Short Ram gets in.

I believe there is a thread about home depot intakes.

I really like the setup I have, I know you can't be original by copying it, and I'd hate to have someone copy it, BUT...I don't think there is a more efficient way to do a RAM air setup..I still have the stock feeder tube on an oversized K&N with atmospheric air being fed directly from hood to filter...no rain issues, no heating of the air through the engine bay, (at least not till it gets to the filter) Don't have to wash the filter any excessive amount, bout every 10,000 or so..

Yeah...i plan on working on the plate to hold the tubes near the filter this afternoon afterwork...providing my friend still has all that sheet metal lying around.

Thanks for the input so far people!

is the added weight from tubing and duct work, plus the addition of parts (more things there are, more things to go wrong) really worth the extra horse?

From previous custom intakes, the common thing they find is no hp gain, moderate torque gain...even RMR had problems making more horses out of their early intakes.

Prehaps not at first.

But who really knows?? The fact is that the engine could pull in more/cooler air. Whether or not this actaully gives me any kind of gain with my current setup remains to be seen. and any extraneousness of this setup, in my book, would be hardly noticable.

I knew I wasn't the only one with this idea! My problem is having an auto tranny, not much room to work with.

i was going to do this as well - - in fact exactly what you are talking about - - it will be fine -- i did it on my old car - - i had a SRI on a 92 escort GT (haha yeah an escort) (that thing had power though) (more HP than a lancer) anyway, i ran vacuum hose from an air collector at the front fascia to the filter on the SRI and put some mesh on the end to protect from bugs and debris and stuff . . it worked good - -this is a really good source for cool air
