Id just like to add -- (don mean to bring an old thread back to life) but It's true about synthetics in our engine... i started using synthetic 5W-50 mobil 1 and about a year later im getting the flickering oil light problem... i put it back to regular oil and the problems gone. It's like wow I wish i knew about this issue a long time ago.

synthetic is better. did you not change your oil or something? go and use regular oil and see how your car performs then

My car is going on five years old and since the first oil change, I have used nothing but synthetic. I have had no problems. Let me repeat that, I have had no problems. I started out with Mobil 1 and switched to Royal Purple about a year ago. No real reason, I just switched.

I switched to Wal-mart supertech synthetic the other day. It was like < $15 for 5 quarts. Too bad the car is put away for winter and I'm not driving it.

I've said this a million times in the turbo forum, about boosting and synthetic. I ran synthetic on my Mirage after I rebuilt the engine after about 1000 miles and no oil problems. I bought the RA with about 12K miles on it and have used nothign but synthetic and nothing.

I think it is lack of maintenance or something.

After reading 10 pages worth of opinions... I've realized that it's just a giant loop.

The difference between buying Synthetic and Reg Oil is similar to Premium and Reg Gas... "Sludge" is a marketing term, if you change your oil often, you will not get "Sludge" in your car...

Infact, I prefer Reg Oil over Synthetic.... Synthetic does not decrease engine wear. What matters is the suspension of the oil... If the oil is good, it retains engine crap... If it's bad, it puts engine crap right back onto the engine.

everyone should realize here that how often you change your oil filter has a lot to do with it. it could even be the case that someone running synthetic screwed theirs on too tight, or did something else foolish

honestly, oil is oil. if you change it frequently, and the oil filter as often, and put in standard 5w-30 nothing will happen, no matter what you are putting in

This person that is now an oil "expert" isn't the same one that built this engine is it? If it is, don't you think they have a vested interest in blaming something other than what they did? Why do you think the manufacturers of some of the best performance cars out there, including Mitsu, recommend - indeed require - the use of synthetic lubricants. You're barking up the wrong tree.
Ditto on that.

I've learned that you must be very wary of "opinions" about certain things, especially car engines.

yeah. Synthetic oil is simply better.... yes, reg oil is fine and you can run it as long as you keep it changed... Synthetic doesnt break down as quickly so you can run it a bit longer if needed. I changed to synthetic at about 22k. Im at 25k right now. About to change my oil and filter again. No issues thus far. Didnt notice a difference in the engine.

I dont get people complaining about price really.... Its not THAT much more money... I went for the first time to buy it because ive heard all this price complaining and saw it was only a couple bucks more a quart or so.....
