what brand? Custom? Because I heard the crack was from people who had custom built header or custom built turbo manifold etc.....never heard from a good name brand...
I wrapped mine for over 5 yrs and don't see anything wrong yet (touch wood)...but anyway the rumor of crack on heat wrapped header is only appeared in the America side because I never heard anything like that in Asia......
At least from the magazine and motorring video I saw, most of them have the header wrapped....

My friend has been running his megan header wrapped and it hasnt cracked yet. well over a year with it. I wrapped my megan header no probs, besides having to replace the much need head gasket and studs. Looks great too. I had extra so I put it on my pipes to match HAHA!!

I wrapped my header about 3 years ago and had to take it off the same night- the wrapping not only smelled like burning popcorn it retained so much heat that I was getting CELs for intake temps being too high... I don't recall precisely what the codes were but I made a thread about this when it happened

why not have the parts ceramic coated (which won't retain moisture, etc)?

Well you have an evo not a lancer so that might play a part in it, your car is used to high intake temperatures because of the turbo, lancers are not. It could be simple variation too, some people get a CEL with a header, others don't.

I will wrap my header and downpipe soon. As long the header is stainless steel and not mild steel, you will be fine.

I'll post some pics once I'm finish with it.

Alot of cracking is due to the wrap retaining moisture and rusting/weakening the steel. An ideal thing to do would be to ceramic coat then wrap, since the ceramic would be protecting the steel from rusting, but it defeats the point of ceramic coating since many people do it for aesthetic value. It would keep temps really low though.
