2002 Lancer OZ with an 03 Evo Engine...

I want to install a 2003 Evolution engine into my 2002 Lancer OZ Rally Edition. The current engine is fried, it has a bad rod in it. So I figured that since I need to replace it I would go for the stars. Does anyone have any information on doing this? Can i use my existing 5 speed manual transaxle or will I need to try and replace the whole drive train?

I really want to make the Evo engine work with the fwd if possible, if not possible I have time so I am also up for replacing the drive train. I;m open to suggestions.

you'll need

evo engine
evo ecu and engine wiring harness
evo gauge cluster
04-06 ralliart 5 speed bellhousing.

thats if you want to go fwd.

if you want to be awd I'll sell you my outlander rear end which will bolt in.
in this case delete ralliart bellhousing and add evo 5 speed tranny and transfercase

cool?

What about the ECU? Do I need to get the computer from a wrecked Evo? I am looking for some extreme performance out of my Lancer. Also do you know if I would need new axles for the front wheels or will the existing handle the new power?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a newb at this and want it to be perfect, well awesome...LOL

yes evo ecu was on my list^
the only axles that will work are your existing axles.

you might want to invest in some custom driveshaft shop axles since you will probably break the lancer oem ones at some point.

make sure you are getting in over your head. Its not an easy task and with very little documented info on it your tacking a huge under taking.

Search, so far I know of only a handful of individuals that have actually completed it. One spent 10000$ and was without his car for 6 months while the other didn't post much detail on how he did it and what it cost. Other members are attempting it in some form but haven't completed their projects yet. It would be cheaper to rebuild the motor you have and turbo it which can make plenty of power for a FWD car. If you're going AWD, be prepared to either pay a lot for a shop to do it or be without your car for months upon end. Seriously, Mitsubishi's aren't Hondas and doing a swap like this takes a huge investment of time and money. I'm not trying to dissuade you from modding your Lancer but you really need to take a step back and think about what you want to do. Are you doing this because you truly love your Lancer and want to do unique modifications or do you simply want a more powerful car?

ok...Yes i agree this might be too much for me to do then if there have been alot of people spening alot of money and time on it. I just want minimum 280 hp out of the new engine.

Do you guys know:
  1. If the stock Engine will handle turbo preasure equivalant to +160hp?
  2. Should I buy a refurbished engine or a new crate engine?
  3. How hard is the current engine rebuild? (i know connector rod bearings can be a toughy to do)

In any case I may or may not be doing this work myself...I might have a shop do it...Depending on the route I take... Being with out the car for a time is not an issue since I do have another car I am driving (wifes car). But I so miss my 81 camaro and want another toy. This is the perfect opportunity to have a new toy!

The stock engine cannot handle 280 HP, you'll need to use upgraded rods and pistons. If the car has a bad rod, you'll need the stock pieces removed anyways.

if you want 280+whp you're in for extensive mods. even 280chp is tough

The engine will need to be strengthened, you're definately going to need a stage 3 clutch. Your axles will need to eventually be replaced with something stronger. You're going to need to get a really good manifold and turbo setup, with all intercooler piping and heavy duty couplers, you're gonna need a good intercooler, you're gonna need a slurry of gauges, and you're going to need a really really really good tune. At that high of HP, theres not much left stock on the car that can handle it.

You're better off getting an evo. I dont say that often, but if your goals are for modded EVO performance (not stock) you're getting into large $$ and time. I'm all for turbo'ing the lancer to reach the 200-215whp mark because its easy, its proven reliable, and its still a fun daily driver. IMO as FWD anything over the 225-250 mark is lost anyway. At that HP levels AWD is the key to the next step of feeling it. Unless you're looking to drift, then RWD is fun too.

FWD with no LSD and high HP is not fun.

hmmm...maybe 280whp is too ambitious then... I just want it to be POWERFUL....with emphasis on POWER...LOL

Like I said I miss my Camaro and I really dont wanna buy another car when I can get considerable power out of the lancer...and lets face it the car is pleasant to look at too.

So 215whp is achievable easily? then that is what I will shoot for now...

ok...so who sells the proper turbo kit for the 2002 lancer, or what retailer do you guys recommend for buying my parts to make this happen. I found a few places when i did a search on the internet but they were not selling turbos that produce more than 56% HP increase and 9lbs boost max...I hate being such a noob to this. I have done engine rebuilds but it has been so long ago, and it was on big block and small block chevy engines. I really appreciate any direction you guys give me here

Don't forget that the Lancer doesn't weigh that much, 200 whp will probably feel reasonably fast.
