I finally found a shop that would swap the pistons for me. Today they gave me an estimate of $2000.00. That includes swaping pistons, clutch, camshaft, water pump, timing belt, all fluids.
It's a lot of money and it makes me think if I really want new pistons. If somebody knows a good shop somewhere around Chicago let me know plz.

Damn. I'll have to get a price quote from the shop I selected.

Incidentally, I've arranged to have the car dynoed before and after. So that should please a few people. (Ah, the secret's out)

Rob - could you share the piston manufacturer with us (seriously this time)? I'd like to know who makes them.

That is a rape job. Don't do it there. Pistons can be slipped in without removing engine etc. Less than $1000 for sure.

I know pistons can be swapped without removing the engine as I told people in the shop. THey said : if we will remove the engine the potential of running into a mistake is lower. At the same time it will be a cleaner job allowing us to clean engine components if necessary.
So they came up with 19 hours of work. Pistons, clutch, camshaft, timing belt, water pump.
What do you say ROck? Should I go somewhere else?

19 hours makes them be charging you nearly $100/hour (if you ignore the cost of fluids and the timing belt which isnt too much), go somewhere else, i can get that stuff done at at highest 60/higher

THat is overkill. THe less they replace the better. Only thing is now you say you wanna change clutch / flywheel so that alone accounts for $500 worth of work alone so you are getting closer to a proper price. Then camshaft etc. so...... You are talking about a lot more work than just installing pistons.

yeah they charge $90 per hour but at the same time they are one of the best shops around chicago.

Rock should I just swap the pistons and the camshaft (since they are going to have to remove the old one anyway) and then go somewhere else for clutch and timing belt and water pump??????

Let me know what you think so I won't have to spend so much money.

thx a lot

I would... often you can find sales or ads in the paper for specials on clutch changes. I've seen it as low as 110 for front wheel drive. Keep your eye out and you'll keep your costs low. If they want all that money for pulling the entire motor out do it yourself and just deliver it to them... that should save you bigtime although it does put some work on you all you have is time but money is hard to come by. That's what i'd recommend.

I'm sure you can find buddies with the tools/rent the lifts/etc for way cheaper. Cut costs without cutting corners and you'll be making out a lot better.

Thx Boeturbolancer but my all I know is from what I read and find out but on hands training is a different story. I guess I'll just look for some place that would swap the pistons and the camshaft and then I'll take it from then doing the clutch by myself. arghhhh
