Basic Question

Okay so I want to add a LITTLE more hp to my car (or mainly just to mess around under the hood), however I don't want to have to worry about my car passing smog or not. (I live in CA) I was wondering if you guys could tell me what mods are ok for smog or at least the ones that WOULDN'T pass. right now i just have some cosmetic upgrades like a DC Sports exhaust from the second cat out, and an Injen SRI. Again not really looking for anything extreme unless its smog friendly.

Check out the header from www.RoadRaceMotorsports.com. As well as the Throttle Body and Intake Manifold. I'm pretty sure most of their parts pass smog but you can always email them and ask. They reply with speed and answer your question. :]

Cam
Ported Throttle Body
Ported/ Polished Stage 2 Head
Ported Manifold
Piggyback

I hope this helped =)

The Stage 2 Head and the Manifold are not the same. The Manifold is the Intake Manifold that connects to the motor and the Head is the top half of the engine itself.

header will probably make it fail the test because it deletes the first cat

I'd say a piggyback would be your best bet for that little extra juice

correct me if i'm wrong but everything you've listed there won't give you much gain for the buck (except the piggyback) unless you plan to go turbo or put on other mods that make use of your ported parts

No, you're right.

Stop. Please just stop. Do not waste money adding engine parts to try to give it a little more HP. You're not going to be doing anything but wasting money. The Lancer is go turbo or go home.

yea I am well aware that these upgrades may not make my car go FAST. I am also aware that a turbo would be my car's best bet but again, I am not trying to mess up my smog. Maybe to some of us we would just have more fun messing around with our cars besides im getting a new bike pretty soon so i could really care less about going turbo. thanks for the input though guys.

All the parts listed will help with the turbo. I'm getting all the things while I have time to tinker on my engine and what not. The gains aren't much but slightly noticeable to me the driver plus it gives me something to do with my car. Yeah, the lancer is go big or go home for power wise but the bolt ons only help the turbo get even better gains

the great thing about the world of bolt ons is that you can always take the parts off if necessary. Just keep all of your stock parts and when your car is due for smog (which only happens every 2 years) take it back to stock. That way you can mod the hell out of your car without worrying about smog. And since you love working on your car, you get to take all the crap out before and put it all back in after smog! Not to toot my own horn but it sounds like win win to me

So what you guys are saying is that there isnt much we can do to create power gains without getting a turbo? If there are ways to increase power without spending that much money, what are they?

Yes. Any bolt on will only result in maybe 2 hp on the 4g94. I think amby spent thousands in n/a mods and dynoed somewhere around 100hp.

Waste of time and money.

Yeah he spent a chunk of change on bolt ons and didn't get much power but he was never tuned. Only dyno'd. I think he would have had better results if he was tuned. Not by much but would have been better.
