rookie Electrical Problem (need to turn off power to stereo)

Okay, my stock lancer stereo (lancer 2002) seems to have frozen itself. It is stuck on a Track frozen and does not do anything. I can not turn off the stereo, it does not play anything, and I can't switch to the radio. Basically, I am driving to and from work with just my thoughts.

If I turn off my car, the stereo still looks like it has power because the screen still says track 20, and doesn't turn off.

How do I force this thing to turn off? Do I need to find instructions on how to remove the stereo and then put it back in after the power is gone? Should I remove my car battery? Is there another more simple way, like if I could remove a fuse for the stereo (if so, where and how do I access this fuse panel).

thank you for you help

Unplug the negative terminal on the battery for 10 minutes. Then reconnect it, let your car idle for 10 minutes and you can drive it again cuz it resets the ecu. It drains all power to everything electrical.

I actually tried removing the black negative side earlier, but I could not. The red side can be removed with a wrench, but the nut will not turn on the negative side. It appears to be corroded on and stuck.

So I don't think I can do that. I was hoping there was a simple way of either disconnecting the stereo or fuse for it.

I was told by someone at work that if I remove the fuse for the stereo that should cut the power for the stereo. Is this true? If so, how do I access the fuses in my lancer?

Yes that is correct removing the fuse will cut the power, but the chances of this fixing the radio issue totaly is slim to none. Your fuse box (as you are seated in the drivers seat) is to the left of the steering wheel on the lower part of the dash where the change holder box is. (the place which has a little door that swings down when you pull on it) Open that up and pull it out (pull the whole compartment straight towards you) and this will pop out and the fuse box is behind it. I recomend taking the car to you local Best Buy or whatever and getting a new radio my friend

NOOOOO!!! Do not give up hope yet. I know exactly how to fix this problem.... My radio did the exact same thing. You have two choices but seeing as you've already tried the second one i guess you only have one...
1) Remove your radio from the console and unplug the harness from behind it. The radio will reset.
or...
2) disconnect the negative terminal from you battery and leave it off for 10 minutes then reconnect it and leave it connected for another 10 minutes. but keep in mind that if you do this step your computer will reset and will have to "re-teach" itself.

good luck man! let us know if it fixes the problem or not!

if u disconnect the battery, then ur tranny will have to re-learn your shift points ( if ur auto. ) so u will have to drive it around a little so it can get used to your acc, and dec.

to get the coroded battery terminal off, use baking soda powder covereing the terminal with a little water. it will bubble and fizz, and the corrosion and stuff will come off, then wire brush the terminal as best you can, or if u havea terinal cleaner, use that to scrape the terminal clean and the inside of the connection clean. use wd-40 to get it off if u have more probelms, but whatever you do, do NOT strip the bolt out using the wrong tools, use a box end wrench or MAYBE a socket wrench, but box end is the best way to go.

that should solve the problem.
