GTS: Liking the CVT
GTS: Liking the CVT
3 Drive modes:
This isn't Acura's or Nissan's CVT; you DO feel shifts. Although traditional CVT gives you completely smooth acceleration, it doesn't get full power AND full efficiency, you get 1 degree of, or between each. I think Mitsu wanted to mix things up so you move through the power band continously so their CVT feels more like the VW DSG or other Auto-Manual transmissions. I wonder if this is something we'll be able to tune eventually.
For those dying for more pictures, go look for my post in the Show and Shine forum. If you've got other questions, post in the proper forumns and send me an IM to let me know you have and I'll do my best to keep up.
I am loving this car. Best bang for the buck yet for an entry level sedan. Go Mitsu!
- Drive (a.k.a. Auto) - Car drives like a 6-speed fully automatic transmission
- Drive, Sport (temporary) - Once you hit the downshift paddle (or use the stick), the car goes into sport mode and the drive must control gear selection. You can switch back by holding the upshift paddle for 2 seconds. When you come to a complete stop, you don't have to downshift and the car will then resort to Auto.
- Sport - Must put the shift selector in sport mode (the other two are in the basic D position). Driver must control gear selection at all times (though I think it will drop for any gear to 1st when you come to a complete stop. I don't remember right now)

Man, I'm pissed because I got the 04 lancer for my first car and now this is out and my sister is getting her first car soon. I'm trying my best to talk her into wanting this (mainly so I can drive it). Congrats on the new car and being the first person that we know of to own one. It will be fun not seeing another one on the road for a while. Thats how i felt when I got my lancer back in 03.
$18,839 MSRP
$1,500 Sun and Sound Package
$630 Delivery
$20,969 TOTAL MSRP
I did have one dealership willing to drop $500 off the initial MSRP (I've bought 3 new cars from them in the last 5 years), but they didn't have a GTS WITH Sun and Sound and I wasn't to go wait and find out if more were coming in in the next 2-3 months.
$16,990 for the Base '08 Lancer (which is still fairly nice)

Buying this car was a lot like buying my (any) EVO. They know if I don't take their offer, someone will the following day. They only had 3 on the lot period, only 2 were GTS, only 1 was GTS with Sun and Sound. I had no leverage to sweat them. Laws of Supply and Demand, low supply + high demand = High price
Anyhow, there's not much markup for them to work with and so far the 2 people I've had estimate the cost (both were fairly knowledgable about cars in general, and both used to driving $30k+ cars, estimated the price at $25k and $27k so taken in context, $21k was fine for me
It is still a hell of a lot of car for the price.

There's no way anyone will be walking away with one of these Lancers for much under MSRP for at least 6-8 months. Hell, it'll probably be another 3-4 months before all the Mitsu dealerships even get some to sell.
I was at a Dealer in Van Nuys, Ca and they had two 2008s. Both had a dealer markup of $2995.00.
I test drove the SE model with the CVT. Power was adequate but not stellar. The car was smooth and pretty nice. The fit and finish reminded me of my WRX.
I really want to drive the GTS with the paddles.

FYI.
www.kbb.com has prices up for the 2008 Lancer.

I just don't see how a dealer could charge a markup on a car in this class. I understand it's new and all, but in 2 months they will be on every lot...I guess you have to pay the premium if you absolutely need to be the first person on the block to have one.
Well its going to stop me from buying it if I have to pay a $2995 dealer markup. I have never even paid full MSRP for a car let alone one with an additonal markup.
However on this car I would be willing to pay MSRP since there is not a big difference from invoice.
I guess we will have to wait and see. There a few Mitsubishi dealers in my area so I will wait and see what happens.
