03 lancer es a/t wont shift

my brothers has a 2003 lancer es. the car today stopped shifting. its a automatic and feels like its stuck in 3rd gear. it shifts hard into reverse but will succesfully shift into neutral and drive. so starting off the car is in a high gear and wont down shift so its really sluggish until you get to about 40 so i am assuming that its stuck in like 3rd gear or so. well we have a check engine light so we got it pulled at the autozone and its a p1751 wich is for the a/t control relay. well in the underhood fuse box there is a relay that says a/t so i replaced it and let the car sit with the battery off for about 3 hours. The car was turned back on and the ses is stll on and the car is the same wont shift. now if you put the car in L gear i rides at 40 mph at like 2500 rpm the card idles fine also. so wether the car is n dive, L, 2, or 3 it acts exactly the same and it will not down shift. u gotta give it much gas to get up the driveway so i advised him to not drive it infear of blowing tranny until we can figure it out. any advice will be appreciated thanks in advance

Actually happened to me once also out of the blue . I just disconnected the battery and fixed it for some odd reason . Try checking the fuses and relays before going mechanical .

Alright so just want to confirm you changed out this relay, 3rd from the rear. If so I suggest like 02 there to check all your fuses and let us know if you find anything. Also idk since I am manual but if that relay has the same numbers on it as the two next to it you can try switching them around to see if you might have gotten a bad relay for a replacement. Would not be the first time I have seen this happen.

well thank you for your help. I feel like an idiot and the fuse box undercover made me believe that the correct relay was in between the 2 others rather then on the outside... i just placed the correct on in and reset the battery and about to see what happens

hey so update... i replaced the correct relay and reset the battery and magically the ses was finally off and it runs great. my final question is wether or not there is a serious issue that has caused this or if the relay could just go bad at about 95k miles

I dont think there is a serious issue, unless this happens again, i wouldnt worry about it. Sometimes things just go bad, ya kno?

+1 I would not worry about searching for a cause unless it happens again. Then I would start checking wiring connections.
