autometer oil pressure gauge
autometer oil pressure gauge
What has to be done to install one of their electrical gauges on an OZ? I know that it comes with a sending unit, but what exactly has to be done to install that unit, i.e. are any extra adapters needed
It depends on what fittings Autometer includes with the gauge, but you'll end up having to unscrew the factory oil pressure sensor, and installing a tee fitting. The factory oil pressure sensor is screwed into the oil pump casing immediately above where the oil filter is. You can see it real clearly when you're under the car. The original sensor screws in at one end of the T and your new gauge sensor at the other end. Otherwise if you just put the new sensor in where the factory one was, you'd end up driving around with the low oil pressure light on unless you pulled the bulb.
I 'm not sure of the pipe thread size for the sensor port. Someone else here will most likely know though.. Most likely a trip to a hardware store or other place with plumbing fittings might be necessary since a lot of the gauge kits come with USA type setups in mind - could be wrong here though.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that depending on the sensor size from Autometer (like if it's larger than the stock one), it is possible (and maybe better) to run a short length of braided hose from the port to a (3) way fitting so that you don't have a big lump of metal vibrating at the sensor port. You end up putting the fitting against the firewall or somewhere else close. But with this setup you'll need a small hose fab'd up too.

Thanks for the info, its helpful.. one more question, if i go the route of a mechanical gauge, where would the best place to put the tee section be? or would it be the same idea as installing the tee for an electrical gauge? also, any idea on what the easiest way to run the wiring for the electrical or tubing for the mechanical gauge from the sensor to the gauge would be?
Even with the mechanical gauge, the idea is the same as you thought. Instead of a electrical pressure sensor screwing into the port or fitting, it would be a capillary tube / line that screws in it's place, taking the oil all the way to the gauge itself. However, the idea of 200 plus degree engine oil going into the cockpit doesn't exactly thrill me too much.
In terms of getting the wire from the sensor or tube into the cockpit, there have been some other threads posted by members that have actually done a gauge install. If memory serves, there is a grommet of sorts where the main fusebox's wiring harness enters the car. I believe this is on the driver's side, and that it may be necessary to remove the fender liner in order to see / get to the grommet. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this.
