K&N Filter maintenance

I do a lot of driving through the mountains on the weekend, which usually means at least 2 trips down a dirt road, and I have the RRM hood scoop, so I'm sure my filter has definetly gotten significantly dirty lately. What is recommended mileage for the filter, I know they're reusable, but what do you recommend for cleaning them?
gracias

Have you considered putting a mesh behind the scoop to make it sliiiightly less dirty?

I can't remember where I was reading about K&N filter maintenance, but I'll try to find the link for you again.

Yeah, I'd pretty much clean it if it looks really dirty.

Oh it's dirty after a rally huh? Gee ya think? Heck...I thought of one thing where it's really easy to clean and it's one those Blitz SUS filters. Expensive like no one's business but I believe all you have to do is hose 'em down and dry 'em out since they're made of a very fine stainless steel mesh.

Just eyeball it. If it looks pretty dirty it should've been cleaned long ago. K&N have cleaning kits for their filters. Works real easy.

I have an RMR intake, do you think I should use the K&N kit for that, or just hose it down and dry it out. Off topic, Im getting my Eibach pro-kit on Thursday, can wait.

They're oil-soaked/treated cloth so using water might not be the best idea. It may just smudge the dirt and bead off. I'd suggest using the kit or a cleaning agent similar to it. Of course there's a good chance I'm really wrong, but I figure it'd be better to play it safe.

cleaning the filter

You need to get the K&N cleaning kit - - - it has this special oil that u put on it after u wash it off with water (and the cleaning solution that comes with the kit) only and let it dry - do not use any other cleaning solution - - its a reddish oil . . .thats why the filters are always red - - after u rinse it out its white then add the oil from the kit - -this oil is a NECCESSITY for cleaning these filters - - - I had one on my old car and cleaned it this way for three years and it was like new when i sold the car - - I would strongly suggest that the filter gets cleaned this way . . . . . . in fact i've heard that u shouldn't clean the filter at the first sign of dirt . . . they actually say that the filter works better a little bit dirty?? got me . . . . i used to clean mine every 4 months or so, but depending on how dirty it gets u may need to do it more often . . . Hope this helps

Yeah...definitely wanna avoid hosing that down (basic chem: water don't mix with oil). Just FYI, the only reason I suggested hosing down a filter only applied to the Blitz SUS.

Since I now use the far superior amsoil filter, everything works better
Soke with cleaner, dry, reapply oil, reinstall...so easy

water

everyone keeps saying do not use water, but the kit says 1. spray the cleaner on the filter- - let soak for ten minutes 2. rinse with tap water in the direction from inside to outside to flush the dirt and debris out of the filter (if you run water from the outside in it just pushes the dirt further into the filter) - - 3. after the cleaner is rinsed out and the filter is clean let filter completely dry (the filter will be white now) 4. then apply the K&N oil provided (make sure everything is coated red with the oil). . . . . .
