Cv axle is bad. Whatever side you hear the noise coming from is the bad one The CV joint is getting too much play in it. Its best to change it out asap, if it fails and binds up while driving it could bust your transmission

doesn't seem like its coming from there though, I don't know, I'll take it to my buddy and have him throw it up on the rack and look. It could be that though, hell that car has almost 140k on it.

Probably hearing the noise echoing off of another part of the engine bay.

I have a noisy situation with my 02 Lancer Rally. At random times there is this metal on metal noise coming from the front-right side of my car. Does anyone know what this could be? Could it possibly be my brakes banging against my rotors? About half a year ago I went to my mechanic to change my brakes. The brakes aren't authentic mitsubishi brakes and are after market. I also had my radiator replaced because it stopped working and my car over heated. As of recently I've also had the 'check engine light' on. I went to my mechanic and took a reading; P0421... catalytic converter. Good thing I passed the smog check earlier this year or else I wouldn't know what I'd do. Anyway, could any of the following be the problem?
Any suggestions on what the problems about the noise can be?
Let me know!

Thanks,
David

I would first look at the dust sheild for the brakes on that side. They are easily bent and they will rub on the rotor. Just bend it back by hand if it is found to be rubbing. As far as the cat goes this is a common issue. Just get another cat online and have a shop install it or install it yourself it bolts in.

Thumbs up 2 Strange Noises

My 2013 Lancer SE ( 7000km) has 2 strange noises. The first one is a metallic squeeking noise at low speeds ( 5-10 kmh) the second is a sort of clunking /popping noise from the right front that happens while driving along at any speed, mostly on uneven pavement.

I'm going to take it into to the dealer this week, but I just wanted to see if anyone could put me on the right track before the service advisor gives me the BS lines.

Many thanks

Its possible your brakes are causing the squeaking noise depending on if your really hard on them. Clucking/popping sounds like some kind of ball joint or something that was not properly installed. Don't let them push you around at the dealer make sure they show you exactly what's wrong if they say its not covered. They can be shady like that sometimes.

LOL ya ..shady is being nice about it. the sqeeking noise is when im just coasting in a parking lot and not touching the brakes at all. the clicking tapping thing is just annoying and it seems to be only in the front right side. I'm going in for my free oil change tomorrow so I will see what they say.

Also the service advisor said they use 5W-20 for the Lancer and the manual clearly states 0W-20?? It even says 0W-20 on the hood sticker.. I even verified this with Mitsu Canada and they said to use 0W-20. Any thoughts on this one??

Unhappy

Ok.. Took the car in on Thursday. Of course they could not duplicate the sound from the right front side of the car, they seem to always say that don't they?.The techy just lubed up the rubber bushing on the strut tower and said try that. I drove the car down the road and guess what? hahah its the same or worse even..lol. As far as the sqeeking noise goes the service advisor said it was most likely a backing plate on one of the brake pads?? I have no clue if this is accurate or just an excuse.

I'm going back on Monday to let them have the car for the day and let them figure it out. When I pointed out that they should use 0W-20 the service dude just said ..nope we use 5W-20 and we don't even stock 0W-20. I said so you're going to use something other than what the Manufacturer clearly states on the vehicle sticker and in the manual? he said dont worry it's fine. I said ok cool.. hope my engine goes bad in the next 3 free oil changes and you guys are left with explaining why the wrong oil was used. I'm pretty sure that won't happen ,but it still bugs me that these guys are so offhand about something like that, makes me wonder how much other stuff they ignore.

To make it an even better dealer experience they gave me a free "courtesy exterior wash" lol, they must have used the dirtiest hose they had in the back because the car had dirty water spots all over the entire surface!! I drove right to the touchless wash to get the crap off of it!! I've got 3 more free oil changes and then I'm going back to my regular neighborhood mechanic.

Personally I would cut them off right now from your description of the experience. They sound like a horrible place to go. Its quite possible they are correct on the backing plate. I have seen that happen before they do detach from time to time. On the back of each brake pad is a metal plate that has just a couple little "fingers" that hold onto the pad itself and can easily loose grip. Intermittent problems do tend to silence when the mechanic is around hahaha. Sucks but seems to be the case. Tons of times I have had people bring me cars and I cannot duplicate the issue so all I can do is speculate on the cause and a solution. Sometimes its a hit, others its a miss .

I have a loud noise coming from the front of the car right around where that fan is located. It almost sounds like rubbing or whining. I do not know what it might be because the noise echoes through the engine bay. Sometimes it even sounds like squeaking. Like a mouse on a wheel. lol. Any suggestions would help. Thanks guys!

"Tin" vibration

After having cams, speed dens conversion, new belts and pulleys/water pump, head studs and handful of other things done...
Very loud and ANNOYING vibration coming from under car near downpipe....
Over the past few months of searching for this noise i have tried...
Fixing the headers that cracked at some point in this ordeal...
loose bolts on coilover kit .. fixed
removed my cross member and ANYTHING else under front end that would make such a tinish vibration....just to eliminate options... still makes noise
downpipe touched oilpan, wrapped downpipe with exhaust wrap.. thick. still noise!
i am at the end of my rope , noise causes me not to drive the car cuz its so damn annoying... only between 4k and 5ksih rpm does it occur. Louder at idle, not as much when im moving. Its coming from the front end, louder when under the car... I have jammed peices of silicone to shim where anything touched in engine bay and still the f*ing noise ! heat shield over cat delete is not touching and i reinstalled hardware for that, i guess harmonics could cause that crappy tin to vibrate ? any insight or ideas would be appreciated

I still have a weird sound that I think is from the trans, mainly since once the sounds starts if the car gets put into "N" the sound stops (I have a CVT). The sound starts at random times, either while accelerating, after acceleration or even when hitting the break or downshifting with sport mode (this part is more rare, mostly happens with the 1st 2 listed). There are times where the noise is low, but I hear it still, or even gets loud and annoying where I feel you can be far away and still hear my car. I think it has to be something with how it shifts. Waiting for it to be constant because when I bring it to my shop for them to look at it, the car doesn't want to help me out and it acts fine. very stubborn car!

Have you checked the preload on your wastegate actuator? Assuming you still have an internal wastegate the noise could be caused by your flapper door rattling. Although this would effect your boost as well by longer spool up and less peak boost.
