How do you clean melted bumper off of muffler?

Okay, so I put in the DC sport TCS catback. and the bumper melted. Sorta my fault, I didnt put one of the rubber hangars on all the way. Anyway I fixed the muffler position, but now there's all this crap on the muffler, other than using my nails to scrape off all the melted plastic, is there a way to clean it?

You can usually clean melted plastic off with acetone or xylene. Just wear gloves before you use them.

Thanks! I'll try that as soon as I get some acetone or xylene. Whatever xylene is.

Unhappy

I just picked up the new DCsports SCS 6001 cat back system for my 2002 OZ. I ran into the same problem the f*cking tip is way too big and smacks the sides of the stock OZ bumper extension. The plastic melts all over the tip and it smells like ****. There web site does say that the system is for the 2003, so maybe the 02 bumper is different. All I know is that so far DC Sports has not done to well with the lancer. This tip issue and the strut tie bar that didn't even fit. They are re-releasing the strut tie bar, it might fit this time, but then again I have the second cat back system they have put out and it melts the bumper just like the first. Hey DC Sports maybe you guys should stick to Honda's and Acura's. On top of the melting bumper issue the new single canister system is a bit loud for my liking. The car already looked faster then it is but now it sounds faster then it is as well. It doesn't sound bad and it would be perfect for a track car but it is too loud as a daily driver (I don't think many of us are using our lancers strictly as track cars). There is this deep drone that is almost defining between 3,000 and 3,500 RPM when you are full on or full off throttle. There has to be a better choice for cat back systems.

Try using chemical paint stripper, like Zipstrip. I know that stuff melts plastic.

Then use the acetone for the final cleanup.

Take your muffler off and heat it with a propane torch. Wipe off all the black sluge when finished with a rag. Chemicals and rubbing can wreck the finish of the tip..

Also: Make a heat sheild for your bumper so it doesnt happen again.

Use some brillo, tends not to really scratch stainless steal or crome to bad.
