Am I missing something here? The GTI's start at $21,990, well below a new Evo...unless you know of somewhere to get an Evo that cheap.
Are the GTI's getting marked waaay up? I hadn't heard about that
Nope,i mean in Malaysia.For the price of GTI(RM203k),you could have a EVO 8 or EVO 7+RM50000 in mod or +RM45k more,i could get a EVO 9 GSR>

yep in the US they are going for 21500, fully loaded is like 28000. but you can always talk down the price on mass produced cars (like the gti). so figure msrp-$800+ttl...still pretty damn cheap.
some mitsu dealers are selling new Evo IX's for hella cheap in california...something like $25k for a new RS, $28k for a IX GSR...

My shop just flashed a 2006 VW Jetta GLI and Audi A3 with the FSI, both have the DSG trans. We have a GTI customer coming in when he takes delivery of his car.
91 pump flash...252 hp and 297 lb/ft torque to the flywheel, with peak torque at 5900 rpm. This is with out any other mods!
Transformed both cars, found even that with almost 300 pounds of torque, torque steer isn't so bad. With ESP turned off, the front tires just simply spin.

Well I too went and checked one out. Very very nice in person. Inside is way nicer than the ol evo. Seats are great, steering wheel is to die for, cut our bottom, and big thick bumpers at 10 and 2.
Built like a valut inside, much like anyother audi. Just a solid car.
Heated seats, HID headlights, crusie, awsome blue colored lighting, cool trip computer.
Just a great little car......... So the guy pretty much brought one around front and said lets go for a drive.. It was the 6 speed stick.... anyways power feels like about half of my evo, but the handling was great. The ESP must really do wonders. We were on a very very curvy road, and the guy said dont let off just floor it,,,, I was going around 60 or so and he was like keep on it go go go....... I didnt and he was like g'ssssss I had this gti yesterday out on the same road an was all over 100mph... LOL not me I dont wanna flipp or wreck or kill myself on a silly test drive.
All in all, very cool little car. Attention to detail is great, it has alot of things I would love in my next car. But Im not going to trade the evo for one. However The sales guy was telling me of some factory installed VW parts stage 1-3 that can be added to the gti without voiding the warrenty!! I guess a chip and tbe can change the entire power band, but really spinning the front wheels isnt for me.
O , and the FAST toy, is just that a hard rubber toy, kinda stupid, and they are selling for $600 on ebay???? why.

i test drove a dsg equipped gti...i usually hate tiptronic like trannys...but this is a whole different beast. it upsifts super quick, and instantaneous, almost no waiting when i tap the +. downshifts are super smooth as well, the sound of the engine is amazing for a stock car. very gutsy sounding, especially when downshifting. since this was a dealer demo, the salesman let me really get on it. i feel bad saying this...but it frickin felt as fast as my evo from a roll. the steering was very direct, the steering wheel itself is very unique. my hands rested perfectly at the 4 and 8 positions. i could steer it with my knees if i wanted to with the flat bottom! bu it did get a bit high centered when taking corners. the TC never intervened either, it let me have fun. the brakes were very responsive too...not quite as good as the evo's, but still very commendable. i remember reading an article somewhere where some tuner mag said that the stock vw brakes (on the r32) outstopped ALL aftermarket brake companies that had stuff avaiable for the R32...even after 10 consecutive stops! the seats are very supportive, the plaid is kind of rockin. it's standard feature list is really impressive: bi-xenon headlights w/ washers, on board comp, 6 airbags, a arsenal of electronic gremlims to keep you in check, 6 disc in dash cd changer, aluminum trim everywhere, 10 speaker audiosystem, etc.
the only gripes i really had was how cavernous the interior is (this is usually a good thing)...but it felt like my mom's old nissan quest from the drivers seat, but after jacking up the seat (rare for me to do)...it felt better. the driving position is a bit weird, but you get used to it first. the onboard comp is really cool, you can program pretty much all basic functions into it (and directly to your key fob). one cool one was setting the turn signal for quick lane changes, meaning that you barely tap the stalk, and it automatically blinks 3-4 times.
overall i was very impressed. quality is improved throughout the vehicle. it felt just as solid as my 2000 m5. im looking into this car heavily...i almost frickin bought it right there!

BUT, I don't think it's as fast as an EVO man, are you sure you didn't just get bored of your EVO and were a kind of over-excited when you drove the GTI? I mean don't get me wrong if it's even AS FAST as an EVO I'd be dancing circles on my head but I just don't think a sub 25k hot hatch can really compete with a performance-focused 30k+ ultra-performance rally car in performance categories. Well, with that said I haven't driven any EVOs yet so I should do so. I drove an 06 WRX and an 06 STI, the salesman wouldn't let me get on it in the STI but compared to the regular WRX I don't think the GTI is any slower, at least it doesn't feel any slower.
Anyways, that's just a bunch of rambling, I'm just surprised of the level of respect towards my GTI from an EVO owner (I respect EVOs a lot), so I'm shocked and happy at the same time.
