2008 Toyota Supra Rumors (MERGE)

I don't know what you are all complaining about (besides not liking the styling) 350hp from a n/a V6 and that's STOCK!!!! Good hell, that's nearly 100 more hp than the evo was stock and I doubt it will be a whole lot heavier. I'm guessing in the 3300lb range. I'm sure with some simple bolt ons like intake/exhaust and a tune it will easily be over 400hp and that's before even thinking about the supercharger.
and lastly. Whether it's up to par with hardcore tuners desires or not, I am glad that Toyota is at least trying to get back into the performance market. For the past decade their lineup has SUCKED!
It's nice to see more japanese performance imports showing up. While they may not be perfection, they're a step in the right direction. Nissan has the 350Z (which the latest C&D has beating an Evo), Mitsubishi has the Evo, Subaru has the STI, Mazda is at least making an attempt with the Mazdaspeed 6, Speed 3, and the RX8 (but still well short of the salad days of the RX7) but at least they are trying. Remember that the Mazdaspeed division is comprised of just a few people. So now with Toyota stepping back into the ring and looking to go head-to-head with the 350Z maybe we can hope for a similar rivalry as the Evo/STI battle. We all know that that rivalry has driven both Subaru and Mitsu to push the performance of their respective cars. If Nissan gets some competition and Toyota is willing to push and then keep up it will be good for all import performance car fans.
So quit bad mouthing, at least these companies are trying.

good post. I was thinking the same thing.
And for everyone badmouthing this car..............there is nothing out there saying exactly what the car is going to have in it or what it is capable of.........so instead of tearing something apart you really have no knowledge about.........how about you wait and see what toyota actually turns out with this.
Remember when the 03 evos came out? I remember reading "No ACD and no AYC, mitsu screwed us big time, the evo is going to suck.....etc......"
and from 03 on, the US Evo has impressed us all more and more every day...................
Toyota is not into the car enthusiast sports market, as that is a niche market and is like what? Less than something like 10% of the automotive market as a whole?! They don't need an evo, sti, 350z, s2000 killer... sounds like something enthusiast want, not toyota.
The FJ was designed for a "niche" market like you describe. Did Toyota need it? No way. Like you mentioned, they are the most successful car manufacturer in the world. They have a formula that works and there is no need to mess with it. But that's the joy of being the best manufacturer in the industry, you can take some risks that smaller, less successful manufacturers can't afford to take.
Will the Supra target a niche market? Definitely if you compare it to the Camry or 4 Runner. But no more than the FJ Cruiser. Does that mean Toyota won't do it. No way.
Personally I think it's only a matter of time. There is definitely a desire to see the return of the Supra here in the US. IF Toyota sees that desire, they'll try to meet it.

There Toyota, Lexus, Scion and soon to be SMART lineup is doing beautiful right now, so why is there a need for a supra? So keep dreaming and trying to keep hope alive, but it's not happening, as there would have been offical pics by now, because everything we have seen is artists concept or renders some 16y/o has done on his photoshop.

Last thing, maybe not 2008 and maybe not the Supra, but I can muthaf*cking guarrantee you that Toyota will have some sort of car to compete with the 350Z in their line up by 2010, want to bet? Believe me I won't forget, I bet a guy on the C6 Corvette Z06 being quicker than a Dodge Viper, I waited two long years, and when first comparisons came out, I quickly found him and relished in my victory.

I can't say whether or not they'll bring the Supra back, but I agree with the people on this post who've said that Toyota doesn't have to. Toyota has made a lot of money catering to people interested in Camry's and Corollas. There's alot more Camry/Corolla people out there than hardcore Supra enthusiasts who want the new Supra to come out with the old motor/turbo combo. If it does come out, it will be a watered down 350Z competitor because that will generate the most profit.
We all forget that true car enthusiasts make up less than 1% of all drivers. The most popular (in terms of sales volume) sports cars are bought by people who have no intentions of modifying them and most likely can't drive stick (corvette, v6/GT mustang, etc).
