Evo X vs. Evo VIII and IX
3 pages of thread and nobody has the *****? As a current owner of a VIII and X, here's anything anyone has been able to complain about, in order:
Stock handling is numb, even worse than I remember the stock VIII being. Muellerized JICs fixed all that on both cars.
Lots of toys... TPMS, lcd screen on dash, ayc, advanced MIVEC. Almost makes me worry a bit about reliability down the road.
Trunk is kinda small. 6.9cu/ft is tiny until you remove all the foam next to the spare tire and make it bigger.
Stock X exhaust has this awful drone at 4k, the VIII never did that.
But overall, I still prefer the X.

of course both cars have plastic but it is painted on the IX. and i don't have a JDM bumper. i just really don't like the look of unpainted ABS plastic on a car. i think it looks chinsey, like an unpainted body kit. i really didn't like the looks of the X as soon as it came out. i was also not a fan of the way the IC piping was routed under the hood. i am yet to take one out on track but i am looking forward to flogging one on the autoX track this season.
it will take a few years before people can make a proper comparison between the two cars. who knows what will consistently fail on the X. it took a few years to figure out the trans and timing belt on the DSM, clutch on the VIII, and i am sure there will some major fault coming with the X. we just don't know what it is yet.

I went from an Evo IX to EVO X and so far have no regrets. I do miss the razor sharp handling of the IX, but the firmess of the ride was a pain on NYC roads. The ride on the X seems much more refined though and the looks have really grown on me, but looks all depend on the person.

indulge me for a second, if you will. i think that one way to get perspective on the whole 9 vs. X discussion is to see how similar discussions in car history have unfolded. the first link is to automobile magazine's top 25 cars, in particular the top 5 of those top 25 cars. the second link is to where EVO magazine declares the best M car. both are related to the E30 M3.
the whole point is this - fastest track times, greatest comfort levels/ least NVH/ highest perceived quality/ best aesthetic appeal does not always make the winner. every subsequent generation of VW rabbit, porsche 911, and M3 featured in the automobile mag article cuts a faster 1/4 mile, lap time, and does it in greater comfort. yet magazine folks with very wide ranging experiences somehow manage to choose the slower, rougher, uglier older car.
there's a distinction, i think. there's the better car by-the-numbers, and then there is the more significant car. if my job in life was to win time attacks, or try not to alienate my passengers, the Evo X clearly does a better job. unfortunately, i have to foot my own bill. with that, the evo 9 seems the more interesting choice, even if it's harsh or even slower.

To each its own, an even though I do like the Evo X, I like the 8/9 looks that much better. In my honest opinion, the X is a way more polished and civilized car, however, that is not what has historically made the EVOs so appealing. It was its raw performance (Loved the fact that that old Evos didn’t even have cruise control) that made it such an appealing and cool car.
In my opinion, the best looking EVO ever is the 6, closely followed by the 8/9s. And as far as performance goes, I have seen each side bring proof to the table and stir the numbers either way (Power and cornering abilities of both cars). Look it up your self, top gear has several shows comparing the 9 vs X and even against the 08 STI. I have seen just as many videos of sick X making crazy times on tracks as I have seen of 8/9s, (Look up the sick AMS new time attack X, and the record breaking #s of the Cyber Evo in Suzuka). So, depends who you get the info from, but as far as USDM Evos, the new X are the first AYC Evos, so that does give them a significant advantage.
I would have to agree however, that in stock form, it seems the X does respond better to mods, and its AYC (First evo to have it in the US) combined with the new suspension geometry make it a great track car.
Like I said, to each its own, but only when I see the X chassis win a WRC championship or a full race prepped time attack X with better times than the Cyber Evo or the EVO VIII AMS time attack car, only then I will be a believer. Many will say, give it time, the X is a new chassis, and it’s true, I am sure in due time the X will surpass the IX in much if not all forms of racing. Until then, the new Evolution X in my eyes looks more like a regular lancer than ever before (Yes, even more than the Evo I).

Its really 2 folded. If you want a nice conservative track killer, the X will be the choice of course based on how power can be achieved easily and also the superb handling, BUT for a nasty STREET/TRACK terrorist nothing will beat the good ole CT9-A, for now that is.
I cant wait until an engine swap is done, 4B11 into a CT9A and dont tell me its impossible like how the K20A will never ever fit into a EG chassis. The only real advantage the X has is the out of the box is the SAYC, I even heard that the prototype was tested on an Evo VIII and its handling was hideous. Put that 4B11 into my IX, and then its a win-win for me.

After getting my X tuned and autocrossing it this weekend, I have decided I do not regret moving up from the VIII or IX. I do miss my VIII just because it was my first Evo. The IX was a better car then the VIII, but I didn't love it like my VIII. The X is a hoot to drive and its a better daily driver. I think I'll be keeping this car for a while.
Well I went from a nearly 480whp VIII to my X. Now, i'm getting the 35r top mount kit from ETS installed as I type this... along with stock injectors, stock pump, stock engine everything, all ets bolt ons and we're guesstimating that we'll hit 500-525 whp on a dynojet in a conservative tune for it to be my daily driver on pump + meth. Sooo... my VIII was 470 whp (dynojet) 35r w/cams, bolts, E85 tuned and all bolt ons, upgraded fuel pump and injectors. I can see this X making 40-60whp more than my VIII did with less mods and on pump with meth instead of e85!
What i'm really excited about is that I'm thinking of putting cams in... upgrading fuel system and then try get in near the 550-575whp w/meth + pump for a DD.... sorry guys but just wasn't possible in my VIII as far as I knew!
BTW the looks have really grown on me. I must admit that I wasn't too excited with it at first but chose to buy it based on numbers that it was posting early last year.
Believe it or not, yesterday, was the day I waved goodbye to my VIII (had them both until yesterday). I finaly felt like I kept the better car of the 2 and sold the slower/older one!
EDIT: Numbers are guesstimates according to what results AFI and others have been having with a 35r KIT... I might be a little off... keep a close eye on threads I will be posting results late this week if all goes to plan@

I can't wait for the tune! This car looks awesome, I can't believe no one snapped pictures, if you have any... you should post them up!!
this post is long but its all the same, like stated its a question of what you want and like. i have a ten and i used to own a viii, i love the viii but to be honest i remember nobody actually liked the vii when it replaced the vi wehn i was in japan, but after they showed that it was better after time and research, everybody jumped the bandwagon. the name "evolution" was given to the car for a reason, they keep constantly improving in one way or another. mitsu thought it was time to improve to wide range of people not just the purist cause honestly we are not the only ones in the world. i miss my viii especially after putting so much into it, but with all that in it and my wallet empty at times it wasnt completely satisfying in all aspects, ie dd, economical and more. the x is heavier but honestly if you are building a race car you will put it on a diet, if you want an all rounder just pic one that does all that good enough. "all" evos from the beggining to now are hot to me, nuf said.
The only downside of going to an X is losing money on a trade then have a car payment. I will be paying off my 8 next year and will be happy with no car payments. With the deals they have on the X...it's tempting. I put so much money/wrench time I have a feeling the 8 will be with me for a long time.
