sti test drive

well, since i'm still trying to decide evo vs. sti, i went and finally got to test drive the sti today...i came away very impressed..it's definately softer than the evo (ride and handling) but overall a very nice package...i think the interior is much nicer except for the seats (recaros are much more comfortable)...the power is much smoother in delivery and although the gearbox is a little mushy, the ratios work well with the powerband...i am still leaning heavily toward the evo, but i do now have more to think about...that sti wing is butt ugly though...

Just keep in mind if you want to mod the car or keep it stock. The Evo is the way to go if you are going to mod it.

I thought that I liked the Sti....I still do, but from a distance. I went to the Subaru dealer two nights ago, and they had three sitting on the lot. I was looking at them very closely. I got under the car, and damn. Both the EVO and Sti need a 3" exhaust. To get to the point, I saw the sticker of $32,000+ and thought hell no. No sunroof, no radio, ugly/flimsy wing. I still have all the respect for the Sti,but I am glad that I have an EVO. Thats just me tho, I know the Sti is a damn good car just like mine.......check them both out very closely.....see which style you like, check out the prices.....go with the one that you feel best in

I bought my EVO for 32k out the door, one major reason why I choose the EVO.

Cheers,
Winston

price wise, the evo definately wins the battle...i'm just trying to weigh all the factors before i plunk down my 30-some grand...i guess my main concern about the evo is the longevity factor...i don't mind spending a couple thousand more for something that's gonna last longer...the evo just seems fragile to me, i'm not really sure why...

its not fragile at all. I had a 95 eclipse GS-T(4G63). It had around 300-325HP. Remember stock they only had 210. I never had a single problem with it. I got on it all the time. I was running around 18-19psi, on stock injectors for over 40,000 miles and never had a single problem. I sold it to a chick and about 2 years later the timing belt brakes and bends all of the valves. That was her fault......I dont know, if it does have its faults. It is definately not fragile.

if you are worries about durability then go with the EVO. I'm not bashing the STI, but this is the first time they have turboed the 2.5L and no one knows how it will hold up. I'm sure it will be fine, but there is a slight risk involved. the 4G63 has proven itself, its a little beast

I have been throwing around the idea on trading in my Honda S2000 for an Evo or an STI for quite some time. Its about time for a 4 door car, with a trunk and AWD is definitely a plus for the winter.

After shopping around It appears that I can get a great deal on the Evo. STI's are still very hard to find and when you do most dealers are looking to get MSRP.

I received a quote over the weekend from a local Long Island dealer offering me a brand new Evo for $28,800 with the high spoiler and sunroof.

My only concern is that I have only driven the EVO in a parking lot under 30mph and the STI is so off limits I have no way to gauge which one I like better. Up to 30mph the EVO was damn impressive ... I would say it was very similar in overall feel to my S2000 except It had way more torque, stronger brakes and very sharp handling. I realize that this is an EVO board and that everyone will probably recomend it but I am honestly a little concerned about Mitsubishi's resale vale and overall reliability comapred to Subaru. Their seems to be a major issue with the OEM clutch in EVO and really don't want to have mechanical issues after just 5k miles like many have had.

Yes this is an EVO board, but I almost bought the Sti/WRX. I know that I bought the right car for me. I did all of the research, about all the turbo cars out there and I was down to three, WRX, Sti, and the EVO. I looked at reliability, aftermarket, price/bang for the buck, gas mileage, and space. I almost got the WRX wagon. I have owned 24 cars in my life and this car ranks right up there at the top. Would I have been happy with a WRX wagon. I am sure that I would have been, as long as I would have dumped about $8-10 grand in it just to be able to compete with the EVO on all levels, speed, braking, cornering...etc. I wish I had the space and utility of the wagon, but I did not go wrong with the EVO. Oh and on resell value, atleast on the WRX and other Subaru's It sucks. If you want resell value get a Honda or Toyota. Actually, do what I did look at all you options, right down all the cars that you are intersted in. Then mark them off one at a time and do the research on the top 3. Thats what I did. Also do not let any dealership rip you off. We have 3 Sti's here in town, and its are only dealership. So they are not flying off the floor, and neither is the EVO. You tell them what you want to pay!!!

I am a previous S2000 (Many mods including turbo) owner as well, I chose the STI, however, the EVO is also very nice. STI was purchased for mod potential, we'll see what is available when a little more time passes. Or else I will go with a custom setup as with the s2000. It's a hard choice, however, I do like the seats in the EVO, I also like that the IC sprayer is automatic. Anyways, good luck in your choice, get whatever suits your driving and interior/exterior styling....

my opinion in your case:

get the evo, for some reason the sti doesn't really justify itself to me outright.

I opted for a wrx cuz I was pissed the evo didn't have all the parts it should've when it came here, but thats a dead horse. I knew I'd be dumping a lot of money into it, and knew the car would be far from stock shortly, so I got the cheaper one because I had it planned out ahead of time.

Its the best thing to do, plan ahead what you want your end result to be. same thing as planning which has already been said.
