For everybody else, you can rest assured someone is going to find away to build one up to or swap engines out to produce a 500whp version. Just bring money.

However, the pundit in me says that because this car is built with special Toyota sauce it will not receive the crtiticism it should for being a badge engineered vehicle like a Soltice/Sky GM effort would or even the DSM triplets/twins of yore. Or the fact that it took an excessive amount of time to get here.
I don't think its development cycle took any longer than most other cars; it's just that Toyota started talking about the car a lot earlier in the process than most companies do.

Just compare the 2011 Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec (fair purchase price on KBB is 23.6k) with its feature to it.
Based on new car prices these days it's getting to the point where anything <$30k is a "cheap" car.

As for comparing the Genesis to the Toyobaru, IMO, the Toyobaru wins out. Nearly identical power levels but the Toyobaru is 600 lbs lighter. That's a LOT of weight and it'll make the 86 a much better performing car than the Genesis.

The 2013 Genesis might be a different story, as it's getting a huge power bump, but I expect a bump in price to match.

I guess all those people which wanted awesome handling, low power, light, RWD sports cars didn't notice the RX-8 on sale for the last 10 years?

I wouldn't be surprised if this car retails for 30 grand too, the Scion (which is supposed to be the "cheap" one) is supposed to be "under 30 grand", which usually means 29,999:

I'm surprised at some of the reactions to this car in this thread.

Toyota's goal was to mimic the old Corolla (86 chassis) from the 80's, which were light and nimble rear-wheel drive coupes.

An early review of the car by EVO magazine certainly sounds like they have done that: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...ota_gt_86.html

It looks like Toyota has plans to boost this car too.....http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/260343/

IMO Toyota is coming out with this car to test the market and see if it's viable to add sportier cars to their lineup..............we all know Toyota has been out of the sports car game for a while.

I hoping this car succeeds so it will lead to a new Celica, and even better a new Supra.

Yea you guys should wait for the performance version before you judge it. Clearly the target audience for this base model is not a dude that owns an evo. And I think subaru and toyota will distinguish their cars once they get into the higher trims. I think subaru will go turbo and toyota will go supercharged. Those are gonna be sweet!

as i said before, their nice looking cars, but for the price range its selling for plus the low numbers on power. i would say this will be just the next snazzy scion you see every teenager and younger women driving around town to malls and groucery shopping.

Ha ha I wonder....maybe this is 'bait & switch' maketing genius?

In 2 years they'll come out with a 300hp version, and all the 'early adopters' will lose $$
on the trade in??

Lets see a 200hp motor and 12+ compression?
that's not gonna run cheap gas...something not right...dunno

Tires from a prius and single piston calipers? Sounds like the first things that will need upgraded. That radio makes our factory radio look like a work of art. I like the gauges. Dash has way too many angles going on. Not a fan overall of this car, they could have done much better. Think they were going for cheap way too hard.

Wow, lots of hate. To echo what others have said, this car is not about 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. It's about bringing fun back to driving. Something that has been lost in all but a handful of cars. It fills a niche that has been void for many years, excluding the MX-5. I for one am very excited for this car and will be waiting at the dealership for them to arrive. I've owned an Ae86, an SW20 MR2 Turbo, and a MKIV Supra TT. I know how good a Toyota sports car can get. This car will not disappoint the true drivers car enthusiasts.

A little photo shop getting rid of the undersized wheels and dropping it. Herrafrush y0. I think it looks awesome.
