newer alternative to the Evo 8/9?

I think the Evo 8/9 is the pinnacle of a moddable, affordable, high performance daily driver, and while I'll never sell my 9, I do like to consider what might make a suitable successor. The Evo 10 doesn't quite cut it for me because the trunk is too small, and the engine seems not quite tough enough. Question is whether there is another possible successor out there somewhere. I haven't seen anything I like yet... wondering what other think is a possible successor in the same category of car.

^ I agree. To me it seems the only option in the same price range as our EVOs.

I've thought about a 135i/335i but again that's kind of a different league.

Its fair game. But based on what I've read, the flat four is weaker and less efficient than the 4B11T. I assume it hasn't gotten any better in recent years? Is Subaru ever going to ditch the flat four and put in a tough motor to go with the tough 6-speed?

That's a good question...

Seems a lot of people have been going to Nissan's GTR.

Problem is... it's super expensive just to buy the car, let alone mod it. The GTR mod tax is ridiculous.

Perhaps the next rev of the Evo, will be better? Though with the rumors of it being some type of hybrid, with front electric motors, maybe not.

Hopefully Mitsu comes up with something and doesn't ruin it.

I was hoping the Toyota/Subaru partnership would have yielded a better car (BRZ/FR-S). I wish Toyota built the motor for it and Subaru did the body. Wouldn't mind seeing a newer rev of the 2JZ.

I'm continually distracted/smitten with various Audi offerings, a4,s4,rs4... The cost/complexity vs practicality and performance just isn't there and just makes me realize what we have in the CT9A platform every time I take a serious look.

For now I ended up buying a 2009 Honda Fit to take some pedestrian duties from my now 10yr old evo instead of looking for another "all in on solution". In the end I will probably hold out for full electric drive, 4 motor AWD to become properly sorted. 0 RPM torque, ultimate vectoring and mechanically simple... Whoever can make it affordable will get my money.

I agree with you. As my IX SE gets older and more performance centric ( read: tracking duties ), I am looking for a daily that at least gives me some level of driving satisfaction without the pull to mod it right away. The Audi platforms seem to ahve that combination but cost/complexity is a concern.

I heard the new evo was going to be some weird diesel hybrid thing... But yeah a new 2jz would be nice... maybe a 3jz?

Sit tight. There's credible rumors from within Ford that the upcoming 2015 Focus RS will be AWD and 300+ hp. If that happens I think it'll be a fantastic competitor to the STI.

Since the question was asked, Mazda Speed3. Love the hatchback, great styling, lots of torque, turbo, handling and the price is rt.

I would even entertain the idea of the new mustang. Although it's not turbo the performance you get for the price is insane.

BMW 135i I have both the 135i for dailying and the VIII for fun. Hands down best affordable modable car combo imaginable. You already have an AWD car that you say you'll never get rid of, and I'll be honest in my opinion FWD is useless in a car meant for performance, so and affordable RWD car is really a great option. Also STI's require a lot of money to make any kind of sizeable power whereas the BMW drivetrain is so bullet proof from the get-go that you can just go straight for power.

Im honestly kind of tired of 4 cylinder lack of off-boost torque. Been doing DSMs/Evos for coming up on 15 years and really getting the itch to play with V8s. The new corvette is looking quite amazing out of the box...

Same price range will be the Mercedes CLA AMG or whatever its called. ~350hp, 7 speed dual clutch, AWD. Still 4 cyl, but DCT might help that out. Hopefully its not a tank though.

I wouldn't bother with the Mustang until the new generation comes out. Better engine options, better suspension, and smaller/lighter body.
