It is hard to find another car as sexy as the E46. My friend Vince has one. It is a beautiful car but mods are way expensive.

Just thought I'd add myself to the list... I'm in Wood/Lucas County (Perrysburg/Toledo Area) and travel to Columbus regularly.

Greg,

When you did your cams, did you put in springs too? If so what method did you use for the springs...i.e. pull the head or leave the head on. Also, where did you get your spring compressor tool?

I ask because I want to install my revolvers, but I need to do it the most time conscious way. I have done valves and springs before in....V8s where pulling the head is the easiest way. I read that it can be done on the car though....What are your thoughts????

Congrats on the pay off. Now what are you going to do????

No spring with the GSC's. Personally I would pull the head to do the springs, and maybe have it cleaned up while it's off. Fiddling with tiny Ti spring keepers is not the place to save time, and would require special tools to accomplish on the car. I have a spring compressor in my tool box; it's for old v-8's, but i made a modification for use on 16v heads.

As for the Evo, we'll just see. There are a couple small thing I need to get fixed for daily use, then I'll just see where it goes. I want an E46 M3, but don't want a car payment right now. Selling the Evo outright would leave me less than $10k short of what I want, but with the economy the way it is I'll probably sit tight for now.

Paul, the way to change springs on a 16V head is to use a leakdown tester in the spark plug hole. You remove the cams and pressure up the cylinder, then when you use the spring compressor you have to make sure the retainers are not sticking to the valve stem. If the retainers stick it will make the valve open and there goes all the pressure that you are counting on to hold the valve up in the head. If you find one that is sticking you can usually give the spring compressor a good whack with a hammer and that will free up the retainer. You will hear it plain as day if you have a leak, so you don't need to worry about a valve suddenly falling down. You just carefully compress each spring one at a time and swap them out. You have to be careful when you compress the new spring so you don't bump the valve stem, but if you use 100+ psi it will hold the valve in place pretty firmly. I think Jeremy at Perf Alignment has the proper valve spring compressor.

Congrats on paying off your car Greg and that is probably the best decision right now, to just wait it out for a little while. In times like these the first things to go are toys so if you wait a little while you should prices come down considerably on M3s.

OK, I've seen a RR Evo 9 on 75 right at Paddock twice now. There is a girl driving it and the license plate says "OUR EVO"

Which one of you boys has got your man card pulled by her??

Or maybe I need to try and stop her and see if she has any friends.
