Clutch pedal to floor. CMC or TOB problem?

Ladies and gents,

I installed a new clutch in my 2010 X around 1000 miles ago. My wife just called to say the clutch pedal went straight to the floor. She heard a clunk, but the car kept going, then a few miles later, a second clunk and the pedal went to the floor.

The clunk makes me think TOB rather than master cylinder. I had a quick look when I got it towed back to the house, and could not see any puddle of fluid up near the CMC.

So...

Are there any other possible causes?

How do I test for sure which it is?

If it is the TOB, what are the odds and the technique for trying to pop it back in through the inspection hole?

Failing that, I am facing another bloody tranny removal. Heart breaker...

I just found all sorts of references to the clutch fork stop but the STM thread references Evo VIII and IX, not the X. Does this apply to the X also?

The fork stop works the same for the X, I think it just requires a longer bolt. Can you pull the pedal up by hand?

Yes, it snapped back up when I lifted it.

What is the significance of being able to raise the pedal?

Yip, the votes are in, and the winner is... CMC ! The fluid now puddling on the garage floor is a great relief, assuming it isn't both the CMC and TOB.

My local dealer says they will replace under warranty so I will take it in tomorrow to get by until I can get upgraded parts delivered. For which I will consult the AMS vs Magnus threads.

Where do you get your VIII/IX masters? Is there a supplier who sells less than $150?

The significance of the pedal "snapping back is that there is no resistance from the cmc to slow the rate that the pedal returns to the up position.

As far as IX CMC you still have to mod the X in order for it to fit. The dealer replacing it is a band-aid fix. It will blow out again. There is a ring you can buy from AMS and I assume other comapied that keep it from "popping" but it is a band-aid on a band-aid. I would save the money and get the cmc upgrade kit. Its a one time fix.

I had the same issue a little while back. I went with the SSP CMC because I thought I could do the install myself and I did. I don't think I could have dome the Magnus install on my own, but I know a lot of people like it. It has worked out well and feels real good now.

Here is a link to my post about it.

Brief update... I did eventually replace the dealer installed junk OEM with a Magnus kit. Quite an involved installation. It is a pain, literally, to get at the pedal connection inside the car. If I was 5 foot nothing and 120 lbs it probably would have been easier, but even at 5' 10" in thick soled socks and 175 lbs, not exactly huge, I had a really hard time getting into a position where I could install the nuts and adjust free play.

Clutch works fine now, although the pedal JUST started to squeak yesterday. And I have peace of mind that it won't disintegrate again.

Nice piece of kit, well made.
