Forward jerk after starting engine

Has anyone experienced a slight jerk after starting the engine? There's a slight forward torque that causes the car to push against its parking pawl. It doesn't happen all the time; I haven't figured out a pattern, but I don't think it's related to transmission temperature on startup. I'd say I experience it about a quarter of the starts. Thanks.

sorry to share, but my car started doing this 1 out of every 2 or 3 starts shortly before the SST failed (at around 6,000 miles), so for me that lunging movement is not a good sign (in my experience) but thats not to say that will happen to your sportback.

I have the standard sedan ralliart. SST replaced under warranty at 6k and now im at 31k with no problems whatsoever.

I dont get that lunge forward anymore. I have no mods on my car at all. good luck

alphawav,

Thanks for the warning. Did you experience any other issues along with the slight lunge at startup? When you said that your SST failed, how did it finally fail, and did the dealer tell you what went wrong?

Thanks.

Make sure you put the ebrake on before putting the car in park. It takes the load off the gears, and allows them to disengage when you turn the car off. If the gears can't disengage, the dripping power at cold start, is much greater and the clutched can make contact. This is all explained in the TC-SST TSB.

Hi, your explanation makes sense. What did you mean by "dripping" power though? I am familiar with this TSB, but it doesn't explicitly mention applying the parking brake to remove load from the gears. Is there another TSB that you are referring to? Thanks.

Sorry, I meant "gripping" power, lol!

In my experience, taking that load off the transmission before going into park, makes everything easier. Especially getting out of park. If there's load on the gears, then it's possible they won't disengage when turning off the car.

The handbrake can lessen the load on the parking pawl and hold the car when starting (versus the parking pawl doing that job). However this has nothing to do with gears disengaging and what is in the manual about that. The gears (as in R 1 2 3 4 5 6) should disengage when you shut the car off (it should keep running for about 1 second to put both SST shafts in neutral). Handbrake doesn't do that, the SST does that in concert with other controllers.

So the car jerking on start means one of the shafts wasn't correctly parked, irrespective of the handbrake.

I heard of this happening on other cars. I believe a teach in is a recommended fix for it.
