what's the cooling like for the stock transmission? most people think automatic when they think trans cooler, but maybe something similar could be rigged to help in this case.

Now you guys got me a little paranoid about my 5-spd. I think I'm going to sacrifice some shifting smoothness for better gear protection by switching back to an oil that meets the factory viscosity requirements. Pennzoil Synchromesh is on the thin side.

As you progress you will need more pad. Fast is relative. I know you pass all kinds of cars at your events, but keep it in perspective. You are progressing so quickly you WILL need more pad soon. If I had HP+'s on my car at thunderhill or Reno-Fernley, etc...I"d have no pads left by the end of the day....Not to mention the release characteristics of a race pad are SO much better than a street pad...it's worth having a set just for track days...try it, you'll like it!
Sorry to hear about the tranny but you have to admit it did take alot of abuse before it let go.
I'm not so sure I would blame it on heat but I'm not a transmission expert either.
Did the gear let go after a shift, in the middle of a pull, or during a throttle adjustment?
I also cannot believe you were using stock pads all this time. I'm guessing your cooling ducts really help you out.
I have well over 1000 HPDE miles on my 5 speed and I run Pennzoil Synchromesh. I change the stuff every 15k miles but it normally still looks like new.

Percy, I plan on it after what I've learned here. I thought I was using a "race pad" with the HP+, but now I realize otherwise. I'm going to keep those on for street/auto-x and start using HT-10s (or equivalent) for track only.
Jeff, yeah, I was not surprised or angry in the least. My car has definitely taken lots of abuse, although I would have to say that not most of the abuse has been in 4th gear until I started road racing. The drag racing was rough on 1-2-3, but probably not too bad for 4th...same with auto-x.
It's hard to remember EXACTLY what I was doing when it let go, because I thought my exhaust came loose and was dragging on the ground (that's what it sounded like). All I can remember for sure is that I had just rapidly caught up with a turbo'd ITE-U class 240sx with tons of stickers to the point that he locked up his brakes going into turn 8. I stay in 4th when approaching, braking, and exiting turn 8, but I had to brake more than normal due to his brake lockup. I then got back on the gas hard when he tried to accelerate away, and while running up his rear end, I felt a clang/bang/scrape. I pitted right after...

I couldn't tell what it was until I put it on 4 jack stands and drove it slowly in gear hovering off the ground. Gears 1-3 were fine, but it had that awful rock-in-a-dryer clanging noise that ONLY occurred in gear when moving (not rpm-sensitive out of gear). Right before we gave up, one of my buddies said to try 4-6. I went to 4th and the revs shot up a bit, but I couldn't really feel that there was no resistance. I thought I was keeping the wheels moving steady, but then my buddy asked why the wheels stopped...well...there ya go, haha. My 4th gear is like an abyss...there's nothing there, but the rest of the gears work fine.

Did you drive the car home clayton?
