Paul, can you make some room in your PM box? I've been trying to get in touch with you to move forward on the suspension. I'm ready...

Sorry for the off-topic, guys.

You like Mosport better than Laguna Seca, Road America, or Mont Tremblant?

Okay, I'm going to momentarily hijack this thread. Chronohunter, can you list your 10 favorite tracks? A little explanation of why would be most appreciated also. So far I haven't ventured out of the Midwest (Road America is my favorite, then Blackhawk), so I'm looking for travel advice!

in order and only ones I've actually driven on...Nurburgring (North Loop of course), Interlagos, Mosport, Road Atlanta, Road America, Watkins Glen (full course), Infinion, VIR (full course), Mid-Ohio, Summit Point (big track)

I haven't done Spa or Kyalami but if I had they' d be in the top 5 but "The Ring" still wins by miles (pun intented!).

ones I don't like...anything designed by Alan Wilson

One that's gone that I loved was Bridgehampton, awesome awesome track

Yea, I've been on Shenandoah several times now testing the At Speed cars, it's too slow and cobbled togeather to be good in my book. Same gos for Alan's "masterpieces" slow corners and hardly any transition corners, minimal elevation change (street circuits in the middle of a field)...

Summit is a pretty beat up track to be on a best tracks list IMO. VIR is my favorite, especially in an EVO.

Thanks for a great list! I have a friend who goes to the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the BMW Club of Europe. They run a week-long program that includes three full days on the 'ring when it is CLOSED to all other traffic. No fighting motorcycyles, tour buses, and plumber's repair trucks for apexes. The class splits into groups and works on individual sections of the track for a few hours at a time, rotating around. By the afternoon of the third day, it's open lapping for everybody! The first few years he went, he just rented a BMW from the airport. The last two years he has found a deal through Hertz (I think) to rent a 911. He says the program costs about $2500 plus airfare, lodging, and meals. That would be pretty much my whole track budget for a season, but I know it would be worth it. He calls it "the experience of a lifetime" and he goes back every summer!

^TOTALLY agree. I drove Autobahn Country Club (Joliet, IL) last year. It's a nice facility, very clean, very safe, lots of run-off, but the track was BORING and unchallenging. And guess what? It was designed by Alan Wilson.

Indeed. I have a special place in my heart for racetracks that no longer exist. Some great websites have been created to honor and preserve the memory of former tracks. Check out:

Meadowdale International Raceway, a beautiful but dangerous old track that operated from 1958 to 1969 in a Chicago suburb http://www.meadowdaleraceway.homestead.com/

Augusta International Raceway, a ghost racing complex at Hephzibah, GA. 3-mile road course, 1/2 mile oval, drag strip. Active 1963 to 1969. http://www.historicmustang.com/speedway.html

Mid-America Raceway, Wentzville, MO. A bit of history and links to the past of this ghost track. www.geocities.com/procrast_race/mar_main.html

Wilmot Hills Road Racing Course. Another ghost race track, active 1954-67, located on the property that is now Wilmot Mountain Ski Area, Wilmot, Wisconsin. Many pictures and stories. www.wilmothills.homestead.com

Lynndale Farms Race Course. Another midwestern ghost track, active 1964-67, located in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. Many pictures. www.lynndalefarms.homestead.com

Road Racing at Wisconsin State Fair Park No longer a ghost track! The road course has been re-activated and sports cars are racing there again. Many pictures. www.fairpark.homestead.com

And this was the best link I could find for your dearly departed Bridgehampton:

heck you should have seen Bridgehampton, now that was a "beat up old track" but the layout...wow! I like Summit because it has a nice rhythm and fast(ish) corners (that's all I need, I'm easy!). VIR is fantastic in a well balanced high HP car

As for the BMW training at the Ring, I've been to that and taught/coached BMW NA employees there. It is everything your friend says it is and I state that you all must do it before you die (no exceptions!). Ask for Klaus, he's the lead English speaking instructor (I have a friend there right now, his course goes from the 11-13 of this month).

Those are some cool webpages. I too have a thing for old tracks, roads, bridges, train tracks, etc. There is just something cool as hell about knowing something was there and the possibility of even catching a glimpse of whats left.
