2009 Formula 1 Discussion
any of these teams could design a car that could lap any of these circuits 10-15 seconds a lap faster then they already do. if you threw active aero, active suspension, unlimited power, CVT, unrestricted tire size/compound and ditched the driver, the cars would be like watching slot cars around a track. but the drivers wouldn't be able to reach fast enough, wouldn't be strong enough for the G's it could pull, and wouldn't be fun to watch after the 1st race if they were remotely controlled.
.
the rules the FIA comes up with every year make F1 fun to watch, it changes things up, instead of MS winning every race, we now get to see a underdog take top honors. force india is close to points, and now everyone is going to be in for a huge battle to the end as the big dogs have to come from behind.

I watched the race on the Spanish Fox Sports feed (and my Spanish is, to be blunt, really bad). Mass confusion! Unlike Speed (which we all ***** about), when the feed switched to in-cars, the guys kept on blabbing at 100 KPH. It gave me a new appreciation for how good the Speed guys are.
Good race, when I saw Kimi come in I turned to my friend and said "what the **** are they doing, it's not even sprinkling yet" and sure enough it ruined his race. Seeing cars spin out while going 50 MPH was crazy. Even the 4000 lb Mercedes pace car was struggling.
The F1 breakaway would have happened, except Bernie bought off Ferrari. Ferrari can't leave F1. Without Ferrari, there is no alternative series. Bernie and the FIA are ruining F1. All these tracks where less than 1% of the people even own cars is not good. The rule changes this year were good, undoing about 10 years of damage done by the FIA/FOM.
With respect to KERS, I think it was covered, but the basic equation comes down to 'extra power for 8 seconds per lap' vs 'having precise control of weight distribution'. None of the cars on the track are anywhere close to the 605KG min weight - most are probably closer to 450 KG without ballast and fuel.

I still hate the whinny little man but the return of the Canadian GP would be very welcome and a New York GP would make me a very, very, very happy camper. If done right I think F1 would begin taking on NASCRAP head to head.

A Laguna Seca race would be amazing!
As for F1 competing with Nascar for American dominance, i don't think we will ever see it.
My personal vote would be a Las Vegas GP to be honest, a Monacoesque run through the city would draw a big crowd of big spenders.
Make no mistake it would probably take a miracle to overthrow NASCRAP country, but having a solid GP in the united states that wasn't organized on a track that also ran NASCAR races would go a long way to putting F1 on the map in the United States.
I am just happy that they are talking North America again. It would also be interesting to know what prompted Bernie to reconsider his Montreal Policy. I wouldn't be surprised if that new contract the teams signed to stay in F1 had a little clause in it regarding the North American market.

F1 will never be as big as NASCAR in this country. Just will not happen... EVER.
I also agree that having two races within a couple hundred miles of each other is just silly but I wouldn't put it past Bernie. I think Laguna would be a much better track. Unfortuneatly, with even all the renevations they did to host MotoGP it still wouldn't be enough for F1. I don't know what track is better suited than Indy?
Lastly... Bob, Steve, David and Peter all do a wonderful job for covering the races. I wouldn't want to watch F1 with any other announcers.
Tomorrow is a BIG day people. The way the season goes rest on the ruling tomorrow. If I had to guess I would say the FIA will find the diffuser 3 car's legal causing all the other teams to spend huge lumps of cash to change their cars to match the pace. We'll see...

Seeing that the diffuser is legal according to the rules just questionable in the sporting regulations i have a feeling it will be come legal. You know that Ferrari and MM have these made by now. If they prove to be legal don't be surprised when those times are rocking new diffusers at practice.
