Official 2012 Formula One Discussion Thread
Ken, IMHO that article is overly simplistic and very misleading. They are taking an average of the performance of each vehicle which doesn't paint the complete picture. There is also the reliability issue. Manufacturers have to walk that thin line between maximum performance and reliability. And McLaren crossed the line a couple of times. I would argue that while McLaren had the fastest car at the beginning of the season, Redbull had the fastest car towards the later 3rd of the season. Simply put, the Adrian Newey car was almost untouchable by most cars. Only on certain tracks could other manufacturers close the gap. At one point, one could argue Williams had the fastest car.
And this is what makes F1 exciting, IMHO. The unpredictability, the rivalry between the teams, the lower teams clawing their way back up to the top, the drivers pushing the cars beyond their limits. Whether you are a Ferrari fan or not you have to give them props for starting the season with a dismal chassis, winning races and clawing their way back into the top 3. I remember at one point, folks were using the phrase, "Screwderia" due to the abysmal performance of the F2012.
Ken, as far as your Hami comment is concerned, I think you are taking that out of context. Just because he isn't ruling out that he may one day return to McLaren doesn't mean he isn't going to do his best for his current team (Merc). That is just a possibility that may exist in the future so he is being frank in his opinion. I think honesty deserves some kudos vs keeping your mouth shut or lying through you teeth.
I'm with you there on Kobay, hope he either get's the FI or Lotus seat.
As far as the fastest driver is concerned, some believe Hamilton is the fastest driver in the grid including past F1 drivers. I tend to agree but this isn't something that can be easily proven and people have heated debates about this.
http://planetf1.com/driver/18227/830...egret-his-move
[qoute]As a result, Warwick, a former F1 driver who at times takes the role of driver steward at grand prix weekends, is worried that the "fastest driver in Formula One" may be left fighting for scraps. [/qoute]
But as SamsonX as said, Hami, Fred, Vettel and Kimi .... (and Hulk, IMHO) are right up there.

^"Yes , yes I NO all that...Just leave me alone!"...I agree it is arguable and averages R just that, averages and sometimes the last 10 laps R the most important and different tracks with associated setups may not have the fastest lap but have less tire wear, etc., etc....That said, it is noteworthy that McLaren had the fastest average lap while Ferrari was fourth over seven seconds slower...I think everyone would agree that is quit significant a deficit considering these R averages...However, since these figures include both team mates perhaps that average time was pushed upwards by Massa due to his poor showing during most of the season barring the end. What we really need is the average, albeit not the best statistic, for each driver, not per team. So I agree with U upon reflection that additional information is needed before making any strong conclusions.
Back to Hami...I still think it would have been prudent to say when asked, "Would U like to return to McLaren at some future date, Lewis?"... with something like, " Well, such a question is a bit premature since I have just committed myself to Merc for next three years and my focus is to win with them as a team" ...by so doing he would show to Merc that he is with them for some time and wants what they want, to win the Constructors....simple as that, for such a response is not lying but rather focusing on the here i.e., Merc and now i.e., next 3 years.

Being my new me I will simply say this comment is rather flippant and off point. To the latter first, my post was focused on the what Hami said and my concerns over same, not when he said it. For the former, on Nov. 26, page 78 on this forum U said, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it. I think there is a more diplomatic way to go about posting. " ...it would B nice if U followed UR own prognostications...clean up the act...now I feel better

Well, this is interesting: Flavio Briatore is angry with Schumi for allowing Seb to pass him at Brazil. Briatore feels that Schumi wanted Red Bull to win. Now, this is the hilarious part: He said, "The only one who helped Ferrari was Webber," he added, referring to Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, who is in Briatore's management stable.
Well, does this size things up for everyone? Not only did Seb have to beat Alonso and Massa, but he had to beat his own teammate, which we already knew, but now the truth is out. If Red Bull does not sh*t can Webber, it will be a travesty for the team next year. Webber is clearly in Ferrari's corner, which is not only a traitorous position to be in, but also means that he is working to prevent Seb from winning. Talk about the chips stacked against you. Hopefully, this will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Seb was the best driver this year.

^^Ken, that is highly debatable whether or not Alonso is the best driver. There has been a massive and I mean massive fight over at the Speed F1 forum about this. There is no doubt that Alonso is good and he got the most he could out of his car. As many have pointed out over there, the best driver is the one who wins the championship, not the one who finishes in second place. Also, many have pointed out that Ferrari had the dominant car for the middle part of the season. People forget how unreliable the RB8 was for some races.
People can argue all day about who the "best" driver is. Personally, I feel there are 4 drivers of equal driving skills: Seb, Lewis, Fred and Kimi. It would be great to see all 4 driving the exact same car. That might prove who is best. IMO, Seb is one of the best in F1 and deserved to win the championship.

EDIT: Also I'm not liking these news lines of Bernie Ecclestone not retiring anytime soon, this guy seriously needs to stop, theres a point in life when your mind does not function as well as it does when your young and he is far beyond this point, not very excited about his "thousands of new ideas" for the sport.

Guys please, we can all talk like adults here. Ken, relax man I don't think SamsonEvoX's were meant to be belittling in anyway. I personally like this F1 thread due to the level of maturity shown by the regulars.
As for Briatore's comments, I think there is some truth in it. I personally don't like it when driver's (read any driver), easily concedes a position. As an F1 driver, IMHO, they are supposed to fight tooth and nail to either protect their position or attempt to gain a position. I felt let down when Schumi didn't even try to battle it out. He just gave up easily. I mean Schumi has done some pretty despicable blocks in past races trying to protect his position. Oh, when it's his fellow countryman who is fighting for the championship, he just let him drive by. Didn't anyone else find that odd?

It was called respect to what he believes will be the only guy in F1 today that will ever come close to challenging his record. Being both German didn't hurt. And the fact that Michael didn't have much to gain anymore, why not show that respect to Vettel?. Not that Michael needed this to be more of a god in my book, but if it was possible to like the guy more, I would. Yes, they are drivers, and yes they are supposed to battle but they are also human.

Ken, I have made a number of concessions to be respectful to you, especially regarding Kobay. I have to say that there are times when you want to make me either quit this thread or this forum. You definitely have been the most difficult person I have ever dealt with on this forum as you have been quite contentious with me. I have been diplomatic with everyone and I would appreciate if you would reciprocate as I feel you can stop being sooooo sarcastic with me. OK?

Montezemolo: Ferrari only has room for one 'rooster'
Luca di Montezemolo has denied that Sebastian Vettel is to join the Scuderia in 2014. Noting that Ferrari have historically avoided intra-team rivalry he explained that he did not wish to have "two roosters in the same hen-house". Jackie Stewart said Vettel would be mad to join Ferrari, and denied he was yet a true great due to having only won his titles with vastly superior Newey-designed machinery.

Tremble with fear troglodytes! Let the the seas part to unveil the power of my proclamation. There can only be one rooster annointed to master the hen-house in my kingdom. The golden child Alonso is not to be challenged by those who may ruffle his sacred feathers.
Domenicali Stefano Domenicali
President di Montezemolo, we are very happy that Felipe will now stay within our special Ferrari family for one more year, and I have instructed him to co-operate with Fernando.
Montezuma Luca di Montezemolo
Silence drone! Thine EMPEROR fumes with indignation at such impudence. Only I shall instruct this weakling, he must succumb to the will of his superiors in the manner of those before who knelt before Schumacher, that Brazilian whose tears could fill a virgin's bosom and the hairy leprechaun creature who cursed me by his impotence.
fernando Fernando Alonso
Thank you kindly for your support as always Emperor Di Montezemolo. As the Red Rooster I will take Felipe under my wing and replace the disgrace he has brought you with glorious victory!
massa Felipe Massa
You're a bloody **** Fernando.
fernando Fernando Alonso
Better than being a lame duck Massa. Roll on 2013, I can't wait to hear the excuses when you're **** again.
rubens Rubens Barrichello
This is so unfair, we didn't have a rivalry because it said in my contract I had to be slower than you Michael. You really got all your titles by cheating, you should be stripped of all 7 of them, just like Lance Armstrong.
mschumi Michael Schumacher
The dodo appears. My contract didn't grant me superiority over you, evolution did. Armstrong's problem was getting caught. On that subject Rubens, if you ever set up a charity you should call it Liveweak.
FastEddie Eddie Irvine
Fast Eddie always had a keen eye for the birds, what do you say we hang out next year Mikey and we can travel around the world picking up chicks.
mschumi Michael Schumacher
Picking up diseases more like. Given your talent level I think Eddie the Eagle might have been a more appropriate moniker than Fast Eddie.
schumi Ralf Schumacher
If you're looking for things to do in retirement Michael, maybe we could spend more time together. It looks like I might also be retiring, from DTM, so the Schumacher name will be absent from motorsport.
mschumi Michael Schumacher
Ah Dannii, the ugly duckling who never quite became a swan. Third last in the DTM series, wow. I'm starting to think having Jimmy Saville as a relative would have brought less disgrace to the family than you.
jackie Jackie Stewart
One must use a variety of criteria in assessing the greatness of any driver, owing to the myriad of complicating factors in elevating one to this status. The title of my autobiography "Winning is not enough" sums up this philosophy quite neatly. The manner in which one succeeds is of equal, if not more import, as that of the achievement itself. Given young Vettel has had demonstrably superior machinery in winning his titles, owing to the Newey factor, he still has some way to go to conclusively establish himself as one of the all time greats, as I have done. In my estimation he would be mad to move to Ferrari.
johnny Johnny Herbert
Here's Johnny! You toe-nail trimming teetotalling tossers. Vettel couldn't even pull that bird on the podium on his own, never mind win anything. What's the bloody Newey factor? Looking like a scuba-diving ponce afraid to get bubbly in his eyes. In my day we drank petrol when we ran out of booze and a blond bastard called Johnny Herbert went diving with all the podium totty.
mschumi Michael Schumacher
Funny thing Herbert, the amount of time you spent on the podium last Sunday was about the length of your average GP. As for The Flying Snot, your opinion is so highly valued that even Grosjean rejected your offer of advice, twice... Next time, ask him out in private and spare yourself the embarrassment.
Horner Christian Horner
Adrian's goggles was an impromptu joke and a very "Red Bull" thing to do, and it is purely coincidence that Helmut caught them when Adrian spontaneously threw them into the crowd. On a serious note, we do believe that the girl on the podium was a spy from a rival team trying to destabilise perfect Seb. The same conspirators are spreading these Ferrari rumours. Additionally we will speak to the FIA about a timing irregularity which meant a slower car qualified ahead of Seb in Korea and could have compromised his race.
wibbah Mark Webber
Fair dinkum Christian, I could have won the race if I wasn't such a flamin galah at the start. If Seb bails I could be a bonza number one.
Horner Christian Horner
Mark, apart from the fact that your one year rolling contract expires in 2013, promoting you to number one status would present Red Bull with a number of logistical difficulties. Due to our strict adherence to the Resource Restriction Agreement we have had to run the sister car on recycled, older-spec parts. Therefore we would need to familiarise you with contemporary F1 equipment. I spoke to Adrian and he graciously said we will upgrade your car with the Silverstone-2010-spec front-wing in the next GP to see how you cope. Anyway I hope perfect Seb will still be waving that finger for me in 2014!
sbstnvtl Sebastian Vettel
Yes, that is what I am talking about. Yabba-dabba-dooooooooooooo! I am the greatest. Hah Jackie Stewart, idiot old cucumber guy. Riiiiiiing-a-ding-diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!

Mother of Christ are you irritating. Just remember Vettel, Montezemolo is looking for a rooster, not a headless chicken.
