oil coolers - location and efficiency

see the top of the intercooler from the center mounting tab over to the passenger side end tank is begging for a nice wide cooler to me. you could fit something almost a foot wide there i think, so the oil would have a nice long distance to be pumped across the cooling surface. That would not requrie moving any fans or anything, and i believe it would give you room to run the lines (although i havent looked).
the question is, why has no one done it?
your the main person i see posting hard data about oil temps. how come you havent upgraded yet out of curiosity?
ill do some more searching. i saw some mention, but most of the "front mounts" were setups like honda-guys.

Yeah, the option in the front middle is about the best I've seen here.
We've been over this a few times in different threads. Do some searching (in this forum) and you should be able to pull them up. The problem is there's nothing aftermarket that's much bigger relative to the cost of them. imo it needs to be in more direct air like the above pics.

do you happen to know the measurement from end tank weld to the tab? i run an ets 3.5, im assuming most re the same, but just for a reference point anyway.

just thinking out loud hear...but which direction does heat flow in the motor?
by that i mean:
does hot water heat the oil?
does hot oil heat the water?
on one hand id think oil would have a better heat capacity, but then the water is pressurized...

I talked with Reese Millens engineer years ago about high evo oil temperature. He told me that he took the gauge out of their race car because it was pointless to worry the driver.. These cars will run all day in California sun and heat with no ill effects. Don't woory about it, the stock cooler is all you need.

thats interesting and all, but i also bet they arent running convention off the shelf oils and internals...and are also probably rebuilding motors every event. even with a high end oil like amsoil, some data i have come across shows breakdown starting at around 260 degrees versus 240-250 or even lower on some ots oils. and some cars like the 929 evo are documenting steady temps above 260. much higher and you get to start worrying about bearings.

My 350 whp stock motor runs race events with Mobil 1 and I have never had a bearing failure. We did put a oil pressure light in 2 years ago and it would turn on in some right hand corners like the toe of the boot at Watkins Glen pulling 1.7 g's Charlie North extended the oil pan and pick up and with over 7 quarts the pressure light does not turn on any more. Still using the stock oil cooler. The car has extensive air sealing around the front bumper to manage flow and a open screen in the wheel well to exit air from the oil cooler.

A stock 8 bumper with simple plastic fillers to manage air flow. I use the stock underhood sealers and white plastic to seal the front bumper and motor bay. The oil cooler has the stock opening. The other is covered. My simple air/intake box pulls air from the radiator opening.
Mine is relocated above the crash beam over the IC. I am not sure how much you will see, but i think it is still visible a bit in this picture. You can find it at the lleft from the Mitsubishi symbole. It is not a factory cooler and has an upgraded lines too. Working perfect there , and far away from any danger zone down there

^^^the evo x's are what spawned the idea in my head...you guys are able to easily mount it to the crash beam tho. i wish i could think of a clean effective way to mount it directly to the intercooler, but my welding sucks.
my other thought is to run one vertically on the drivers side between the condenser and the intercooler (kidloco has his tranny cooler there), but that would lead to some very long lines.
