Speaking of which...how often do you guys change timing belts? A guy in the Facebook Evo Motorsports group posted this week that he changes his timing and balance shaft belts every year in his ST3 car.
I saw that guys post. He does a timing belt every year but hes never done his big end or main bearings

We only do new cambelts every 4 - 5 years when we do a strip n rebuild and thats on a full time race motor. every year is stupid overkill.

Although i definately recommend doing big ends. we do ours every season and they always show signs of wear, And im drysumped too so would be worse on a wet sump

Stock cams and springs will rev to 8k. Short shifting at 7k is definitely not needed.

7000? Why?

you have 600 more rpm without even changing the rev limiter.

5th is basically overdrive so use as much of 4th as you can. I was so happy when I built my motor and could rev my evo 10 to 9k. I could do 125mph or so in 4th. Even then I still had to shift into 5th at the local track in the straights, which totally just made the car fall over on itself.

You can see a good example of the car just go bleeehhhhhhh after shifting into 5th here, start at 5:05:

when i have to shift to 5th no matter what, it doesn't help to try to stretch out 4th - i've tried it both ways. but yea i would like to safely rev a little higher. i'll continue getting seat time this year but will be looking at options for the future

Yeah. Only vapor, so may as well keep it basic. I guess I could just mount everything ACD in the trunk

If you rev to 8k in all gears, maybe that will get you to the other end in 4th?

Yes it will help to stretch 4th. Check the video I posted above. The car just falls on its face in 5th.

Check out how much my speed flattens into 5th in this log, compared to 3rd to 4th where no forward momentum is lost.

is that on the X? the evo's 6spd as you well know has a slightly shorter 5th, i haven't found much or any difference between holding 4th and shifting to 5th.

i don't disagree though, i am looking at options to safely stretch 4th longer, but it will be when i have the funds. a tenth or two right now is not worth any risk or damage for me

Ah, you have a six speed. Well, you won’t have a forth gear to worry about soon anyway.

Might as well do the 5 speed swap now and get that much longer 4th. Don’t wait to go through two broken 6speeds like I did.

My second broken 6 speed was also a TRE unit so... *shrug*

The TRE 5 speed with 03-04 longer 4th was the best thing I did to my MR.

John told me that no matter what I did for my 6spd, it had inherent engineering flaws that would fail. Pins or something or other.
I took crap for years because I refused to get rid of it....finally had to admit it wasn't going to work.
Stick it out as long as you can, dude. I loved my 6spd.

Sneak peak to my winter project that will most likely turn into a summer project. This little guy showed up today.
