my garrett35r had the traditional bell mouth compressor housing when i bought it. i had never thought of surge issues when i took the car up to ohio to get built. well the turbo surged soooo violently for the two weeks i had the car, i was really quite disgusted. i called fp and ordered a used anti surge comp housing for a hundred bucks.

slater and i mounted it up tonight and holy ****. its like a new beast all together. i was intentionally trying to get it to surge to no avail. im ecstatic right now.
hell yeah, i would be ecstatic too. especially since the fix for such a potentially dangerous problem turned out to be a hundred bucks and some wrench time. that almost never happens.

yeah, the traditional bell mouth inlet goes from 4" to like 3" with smooth walls that taper inwards, where the anti surge cover has a 4" inlet with a 3" inlet inside of it. walls are parallel to one another, and there are ports in between the walls where air can hit the outer fins of the compressor.

difficult to explain, but you'd understand immediately if you saw it.

$100 for that cover was the best investment ive made so far in that car. wrench time sucked thats for sure. trying to get the housing centered on the seal plate took some serious fandangaling, but i see no issues now when running the car.

its possible issues may arise when that turbo starts spinning at 100,000+ rpms, but who doesnt like a good fireworks display?

Surge doesn't kill turbos as quick as some people would like you to believe. I'm not saying its good or acceptable I'm just saying that I have ran cars without a BOV and 38 ish psi doing full lifts to shift with that throttle plate slamming shut. People told me it wouldn't last long like that, well it outlasted the motor and the turbo was fine (except the turbo bearing damage due to metal debris from the motor).

What usually happens is a $10 part costs $1000 or more in damage. Its the laws of exponentials.

X^(Y/10)

Where X is the normal cost of the part. Y is how much money you "saved". So if you spend $18 for a jug of tx case fluid instead of the $70 jug from the dealer your cost will be:

70^1.8= $2095

ya when i ordered the compressor cover from fp, i talked to the salesman/tech for a while because he was super friendly and knowledgeable. he pretty much explained that with bb turbo's surge isnt good per se, but isnt as destructive as say a journal bearing turbo. something to do with the level of axial play in the ball bearings and center cartridge.

either way, i checked the amount of play on the compressor wheel and didnt notice any significant comparative play from when i bought it.

the surge was really affecting the way the car pulled though. it would cut out on power in wot and violently buck to the point where it wasnt even fun to get on it in any other gear but first or second.

problem solved; lesson learned
