Cams and Emissions

I, as well as many others would like to know what cams/cam combo's will pass emissions. I live in MD, so we have emissions every 2 years. So hopefully there are some 03's out there that have been thru that can provide some insight on this topic.

I know this has been a topic that has been debated about for some time, but I am looking for hands on experience.

The questions is whether or not 272's with or without stock ecu (flash) and cam gears will pass emissions?

I know that the increased lope with the 272's will not make anything easier as far as passing goes...But will they pass without alteration of the ecu/cam gears?

If you have to have a sniffer test, I highly doubt you will pass with cams, especially HKS 272's. I know from personal experience with DSM's with cams they wont pass a sniffer test. But doesnt hurt to try right? Unless they mark you as a gross polluter.

I am from PA and just had my inspection with emissions done. We have it EVERY year, so don't complain too much! I have an 03 with HKS 264's with a Utec and it passed fine. As long as you have a Cat on, and don't have any engine codes pop up, you will be fine.

Just a hint, try to take it to a local shop and not the dealer. They tried to jack me around about the engine codes and what not, so I left. I took it some place else and it was fine.

Do they stick a sensor in the exhaust even for new cars? I thought all that mattered was no fault code on the ecu

Emissions and inspection are regulated per state government, so its hard to tell what each state does. In PA, any car running OBDII (96+) gets the diagnostic plug for codes and thats it as far as emissions goes.

But back on topic, I dont think you will have a problem with cams passing emissions. Unless you somehow get a PO300 (?) from the install, which can easily be cleared. As long as there are no codes, you should be fine. GL!
