New emissions testing equipment for cops???

I heard recently that cops in some areas of NJ are using some sort of device while driving down the road to determine if your emissions legal or not. I have not found any info on it but maybe one of you guys have. I am assuming it could be some sort of heat senor that reads exhaust temps....im sure cars without cats will have cooler exiting exhuast temps so maybe thats how they can single people out. A couple days ago in Linden, NJ they had a check point for emissions testing my neighbor said. They pulled her over, plugged something into the ECU and im assuming they checked for codes being thrown. My neighbor who told me was kinda old and doesnt know much about cars. In her words she said "they pulled me over to the side and did something with the dash and checked for emissions". Her car was a newer kia small suv, stock as can be and doesnt look like a car that would be pollutiing. This kind of scared me especially since i dont run a cat on my car and i think in NJ its a $10,000 fine if you are caught on public roads with no cat. Anyone have any info on this? Am i just being paranoid?

On another note, how can they check you for emissions if your inspection is not past due? Thats why they have inspection stations right? I just dont want a $10,000 fine cause that could ruin your day ya know? lol Thanks

Wow, this really is gonna suck for people running no cats, standalones etc that totally delete OBD2 compliance

Yea def wasn’t exciting news when I heard that. Like I said I am not sure and this could be a total hoax that may have got out somehow. I know the scanning of the ECU thing is true though, happened to my neighbor last week. I hope it isn’t true but if it is I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be getting fines. Hell if I was the state I would of done this a long time ago, you know how much money could be made by having a cop car equipped with a thermal camera or something scanning cars in front of them. Get behind a car with an exhaust and can right away tell if they are running a cat by the heat signature coming out of the exhaust. I mean they got that scanner thing where they drive through crowded parking lots and this thing reads all the license plates as the cop drives through the parking lot. Then they get a display of who has what out on them, if its bad enough the cop will wait for them to get out of the mall, home depot, movies etc. Sneaky lil bastards…

I live in NJ and got pulled over 3 times for a 'modified' exhaust. None of the cops were smart enough to check under the car (I turned to car off immediately when pulled over so they wouldnt smell it). I didnt get any tickets, but I did put my cat back on. I have basic mods, and retuned with the cat I lost about 10whp but gained about 5wtq. And I gained peace of mind that at least I wont get fined/impounded for not having a cat.
