Did you use a clay bar? It works really well at removing contaminants on the paint. THe stuff at the car washes are way way overly aggressively, and will strip the wax and sealant you apply.

Looks like its a NASA thing. I wonder if these guys are using NASA's Time Trials rules for this "time attack" event. Thats the same weekend I'm going, and my friends are competing in the time trials.

I've used a claybar kit before and I think it worked. The clay bar was covered in dirt and stuff that was obviously not visible on the paint, but I'm not sure how much better my car looked after.

I'll be there the following weekend for a PCA event so I won't be at the time attack. but wow, $250 + $45 for NASA membership for a TA is a lot of $. I wonder how much seat time you get for that?

the point of clay is to pull dirt and particles out of the paint- but you should be sealing the paint up with a sealer or wax afterwards or you just have paint with microscopic pits in it.

I had one with me but a clay bar is not ideal for taking chunks of rubber off a cars paint.. You have to remove the rubber with some sort of solvent or cleaner before you can do any of that.

Right on James. Claying is part of the preparation step. Depending on hte agressiveness of the clay, you may have to follow up with a polishing compound. But seeing that you used one out of a kit, it must be one from an autoparts store, which is a finer clay, meant for light duty work.
