if she's going to be in the area for a while, like 5 years or so, with interest rates being so low and the housing market the way it is she might actually be better off BUYING a small condo and building some equity rather than renting for the same duration.

 

If she is on a budget, I don't see how a down payment and closing costs would be possible, especially if her employment status recently changed.

Mortgage companies aren't that forgiving anymore.

I've heard lots of stories about Amish people getting drunk and doing crazy ****. I'm not sure it's in their religion to drink though but I've also known Mennonites that have entirely battery powered houses thinking the found the loophole.

 

Mennonites aren't Amish so keep that in mind (I work with one)

Amish do create loop holes- remember they don't use electricity in the house, which is why they have phones set up at the ends of their driveways.
