Alright. You are well underway w/this build. Yeah, that block can not be shipped like that! That is unacceptable & would sway me from buying from that parts source

Great thread for sure / Great job!

A while back, I posted about my short block arriving in a similar fashion. The box was destroyed and rolling around the back of the truck. The plastic it came wrapped in was also toast. There was dirt and wood chips everywhere.
It seems they come on a pallet, but then are removed from it to save space on the truck and shipping charges on their end.
I sent it back for another, which showed up on a pallet.
Nightmare. I'm sure you were as pissed as I was.
Congrats on getting it sorted!

I like what you did there Jason. Refuse the delivery & send it back! Yeah, that block should come fully encased in foam or crated

Appreciate the kind words! And I am glad that you agree this is unacceptable shipping. I am just hoping the box took most of the damage and not the engine!

Jason you know exactly how I felt then! I couldn't even believe it was my package for a second. I was super close to just leaving it on the truck and having it sent back but open inspection it looked pretty flawless. The plastic wrapping was still intact but thankfully there were no wood chips or anything in mine. If there are any issues upon assembly best believe this block is getting sent back lol

Luckily when cast iron hits into something, cast iron usually wins. That is an impressive amount of damage to that package. How is it that at no point the shipper decided maybe this wasn't going to be deliverable?

I took video and pictures of it in the truck. I had a solid case. 😁

After debating for what seems like forever, I finally decided to start taking the Evo apart myself and at least get the head off and sent off to a machine shop of my choice! The reason for the reluctancy was truly fear of messing something up or losing important pieces. I am not the most familiar with the 4g63 as I have never had to actually take one apart but I have work on a handful of Hondas in my youth and could figure out the basics! I made the decision to document everything single little thing I do by taking pictures and also labeling any hoses I remove. I also kept every single screw in their own ziploc bag and added notes as to where they came from. Doing so made the process take quite a while but I would rather be careful and overly organized being that it was my first time. I would also end up saving some money as it is less work the shop will have to do so its a WIN WIN!

Although I was not able to get the head completely removed today I am happy with the progress I made. I am hoping to have the head either dropped off or sent to a machine shop within a week! After then, then I will take it to a shop to get reassembled and hopefully get it back on the road before December!

If anyone has any questions or tips for doing a job like this I would greatly appreciate it!

Before taking anything apart I took a quick trip to my local Harbor Freight and picked up this 3/8th electrical ratchet for a whopping $99!! It just so happened that it was on sale which worked out perfectly. I must say this one tool made taking apart the car so much easier and efficient. Although I have no other product to benchmark/compare this one too I am extremely happy with the quality of it. It lasted me hours and broke practically every screw loose with ease.

This is just an example of things I would write and tape up to keep track of where everything goes. Although time consuming, it gave me peace of mind knowing where everything goes in the event I would have to assemble the car back together.

Although not pictured, the very first thing I did in this job was remove the battery & tray, all charge pipes, and eventually the radiator (draining all coolant prior of course).

Next, was the entire exhaust manifold and turbo. I drained all of the oil, removed the heat shield, and sprayed WD40 on all of the screws, including the ones bolted to the down pipe. After letting the WD40 work is magic, I removed the down pipe and proceeded to loosen the exhaust bolts one by one being careful not to snap any of them. Once all were removed, the entire manifold and turbo came out in one piece just as planned.

Here is the bone stock evo 9 turbo in all of its glory!

At this point I had been working on the car for a little over 5 hours and wanted to call it a day! After a quick removal of the valve cover, I put everything away in black heavy duty bags to make sure nothing would get lost. The plan is to send the valve cover to get repainted to complete the entire rebuild.

Upon closer inspection of the head i noticed that cylinder 4 looked significantly more "moist" meaning that I was running rich compared to all other cylinders correct?? . It just so happened that this was the cylinder that was also breaking off spark plug tips so it got me thinking what the underlying issue for this was. Was it a faulty injector? Did the coil pack fail which caused long term damage and eventually the block to give out? I am far from an expert on this and would appreciate any other opinions.

5 hours later and here is everything that was removed in one picture! Some would say this is nothing but I am truly happy with the progress that I made.

I found once i started working on my car that i learned much more about the platform.
Bagging and tagging is going to make things so much better when everything starts going back together.

The bracket that supports the intake manifold is a pain to get to but other than that the head coming off some be pretty east at this point.

That is oil in the exhaust port, fuel would not still be wet.

Hey nice build and thread.
I am also a new evo owner just got my WW 9 mr this year in socal. Currently undergoing the exact same build as you ! This is what I call an OEM++ build. Comfort. More power than factory. Modern update.
I did this build method to plenty of cars in the pass. 3 FD, 1 sw20. It's super fun. Good stuff. Keep it up. I love to see more
