Im wondering if a compression test will even tell you anything? One way to find out...

And even though you may have been going 2-3mph how fast was the motor spinning? 2000rpm. Thats a lot of chances for the valves and pistons to make love. I wish you luck but my money is sadly on some sort of carnage inside.

Compression test will tell you if a valve is bent because compression will be low on that cylinder.

i never comp tested my engine after the failure, but here is a picture of my head with 3 bent valves. The picture kinda sucks but it doesn't seem like the valves aren't seating and the car ran fine aside from the noise.

Could you describe the noise it made?

its been a long time, but I remember thinking it was a stuck lifter, even ran through the factory procedure for that issue before checking the timing belt. Also kinda suspected maybe an exhaust leak.

accounting for audio quality and what not, yah i would say pretty damn close. TBH i think OP's sounds worse, i drove around a little while thinking it was the lifter issue, if mine was making that noise no way i would have driven it.

allow me to clarify my statement. I never corrected my timing and tried to run the motor. So the noise I was hearing was likely the sound of the valves actually smacking into the pistons. I have no way of knowing since i never re-timed the motor and tried to spin it. I just kinda knew as soon as I saw the timing off that the noise was probably Piston-to-valve contact and I was going to need to pull the head. Turns out that I was correct in that assumption, because 3 bent valves. Kinda strange that only 3 bent you would think it would have been at least 4 but weird **** happens.

Awesome news glad to hear! Didnt mean to sound so pessimistic, just seemed like all odds were against you with timing jumping on an interference motor.
